INDIANAPOLIS –
Jaek Horner achieved All-American status and finished 11th in the country in the 100 breaststroke and
Elias Petersen posted a top 25 showing in the men's 3m for the University of Utah swimming and diving team on day three of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, which took place on Friday at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Horner earned his spot in the 100 breast B final by putting up a time of 51.87 in the prelims, good enough for 16th and to send him through to the evening session. In that B final, Horner narrowly missed breaking his own program record, finishing in 51.35, a time that boosted him all the way up to 3rd in the race and 11th overall in the 100 breast at the NCAA Championships.
This represents the first individual All-American honor for Horner, who also took home that title as part of Utah's 200 medley relay team in 2022. Horner is also the first Utah swimmer to ever collect All-American honors in the 100 breast.
In the final act of a banner 2023-24 season,
Elias Petersen put forth another excellent effort in the 3m, recording the highest finish by a Ute in that event since 2016, when Josiah Purss and Jake Crayne both placed inside the top 25. Petersen was able to take 24th with a point total of 346.75. Petersen bested his 3m performance at nationals from a year ago, when he placed 42nd with 303.20 points.
"Elias had a good season and he capped it off today," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "He dove exceptionally well, he was smart, he was mentally tough and he was in it the whole time. He missed his back a little bit, but he didn't let that affect him and he still kept diving smart and was in a position at the end to make the top 16. He needed something great and he almost had it.
"I'm really excited about the steps he took physically and mentally this year to compete so well at this meet and it makes me really excited for what we have for his next two years. He's got a lot ahead of him and I'm looking forward to starting next season."
