SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Utah redshirt senior right-handed pitcher
Randon Hostert has been named the Pac-12 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday.
Â
Hostert is the first Utah Baseball student-athlete to win the award, and the second from Utah to take the laurel this academic year. Abby Paulson was named Pac-12 Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year in March.
Â
A native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Hostert earned a 3.96 cumulative GPA on his way to graduating with his degree in health and kinesiology. He is a 2023 CSC Academic All-District selection and was named to the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll in both 2022 and '23.
Â
The Utes' long relief and setup man has made 25 appearances this season and earned five wins, four coming in Pac-12 play. He has surrendered just nine walks in 50.1 innings pitched, striking out 48 batters along the way. Twenty-two of his 48 strikeouts during the regular season were looking, tying Hostert for sixth-most among Pac-12 pitchers.
Â
In conference play, only six batters walked against Hostert; it was the fewest of any pitcher in the league and spanned 32 innings for the redshirt senior. He put on a Herculean performance on April 28 in Utah's series opener vs. UCLA, pitching the final 4.2 innings with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts as Utah won in a 12-inning walk-off.
Â
Hostert was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2019 MLB Draft, before electing to pitch collegiately at Utah. After redshirting the 2020 season, he made his debut in '21 and has since made 69 appearances (13 starts) with a 14-5 record, 158 innings pitched and 148 strikeouts.
His and Paulson's Scholar-Athlete of the Year selections mark the third straight year that a Utah student-athlete has claimed the Pac-12 laurel. Emily Venters (women's cross country) won in 2022-23 and football's Britain Covey was named a recipient in 2021-22.
