SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah swim and dive team hosted their annual Alumni Meet, welcoming back old faces to honor the start of the new season on Saturday afternoon at the Ute Natatorium.
"It was really fun to see everyone," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "I'm really glad that so many people were able to come back."
Utah Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Alison McInturff made a pit stop at the natatorium to meet the new Utes. McInturff earned All-American honors in the 200 free in 2007 and won six Mountain West Conference championships over the course of her career. McInturff set six school records and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Nick Soedel, a 2015 graduate, was another one of the Ute's who returned. Soedel was Utah's second Pac-12 individual champion in the 50-freestyle with a school record of 19.36, that still upholds today. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native was also a first-time All American in 2015 after placing 6
th in the 100-free at NCAA Championships. Soedel was a three-time NCAA qualifier and over his four years, broke the school record, both individually or in a relay, 26 times.
Giuliana Gigliotti flew in from Maryland to be back at Ute Natatorium. Gigliotti was a 2015 graduate and two-time NCAA Championship qualifier. The Rio de Janeiro native currently sits in Utah's second-highest spots for both the 50-free and 100-free and a member of the 400-medley relay team that set a the current school record and finished in second-place with a time of 3:36.19 at 2014 Pac-12 Championships.
Another swimmer of note, was
Jaek Horner. Horner was in the Utes' class of 2024 as a graduate student. The Hawaii native was a three-time NCAA qualifier and the first Ute to earn All-American status in the 100-breast. The breastroker qualified for the 2024 Olympic Trials and currently holds school records in the 100 and 200 breast.
Divers Luke McDivitt (class of 2023), Elizabeth Dececco (class of 2023) and Hannah Truax (class of 2024), were happy to make their way back as well. McDivitt is the current school record holder for men's platform diving after his performance at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships.
The Utes were lucky to have lots of familiar faces back on the deck and in the pool. There were races from Soedel, Gigliotti, Emma Lawless,
Taylor Kabacy, Charity Pittard, Cody Rempfer, and many more.
"Our team members sure appreciate spending time with our alumni," said Persson, "It looked like they had a lot of fun."
Next Up
Utah swim will start their season on the road, heading to the Intermountain Shootout at Colorado Mesa University on Oct. 5 and 6 in Grand Junction, Colo.
