DALLAS – The University of Utah's swim and dive program closed the tri-meet against Southern Methodist University and University of Pittsburg, coming away with a win against the SMU women on Saturday afternoon at the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center in Dallas.
Utah's women walked away victorious when put against SMU, coming down to 157-142, but fell to Pitt 184.50-115.50. On the men's side, they finished with a 195-105 score with SMU and a 171-129 total with Pitt.
"We raced really well today and I am very pleased with our performance," said head coach
Jonas Persson. "We had a ton of people step up with personal bests, lifetime bests, and season bests. I'm really have that we secured a win versus SMU on the women's side."
Medalers
- The Utes first medal came from the women's 200-yard medley relay which grabbed the bronze with a 1:41.61 finish.
- Chloe Thompson touched the wall at 10:08.83 for the bronze in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
- In the same race on the men's side, Nick Chirafisi earned bronze with a 9:07.52. He would later collect another third-place finish in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:24.16.
- Earning the first silver medal for the Utes, Jakub Walter swam a 1:36.48 in the 200-free.
- In the 100-yard backstroke, Norah Hay grabbed the silver after touching in a 53.93. For her second event, Hay finished in third clocking 1:55.91 in the 200-back.
- Taking the top finish in the 100-yard breast stroke, Alyssa Sorenson finished at 1:01.76.
- Securing another gold for the Utes, Evan VanBrocklin swam a 1:45.60 in the 200-yard butterfly. In the 100-yard butterfly, VanBrocklin would collect a second medal after swimming 47.46.
- Erin Palmer finished her 50-yard free in 22.58, finishing in third-place before collecting a second bronze in the 100-free with 49.96.
- The Utes earned the silver and bronze in the 50-free with Marshall Odom and Will Woodall's swims, 20.12 and 20.24.
- Two more Utes earned medals in the same race, Rylee McColley clocked a 2:15.45 in the 200-yard breaststroke for the gold with Teagan Steinmetz following soon after at 2:156.10 for the bronze.
- Daniel Yi grabbed his first medal of the meet in the 200-yard breast with a 1:59.69 securing third.
- Taking a silver, Nolan Arnholt finished the 500-free at 4:26.21.
- In the 200-IM, Ella Derby took the silver, swimming 2:01.52.
- The final medal for Utah came in the men's 400-yard free relay with Arnholt, Davis Stachelek, Chirafisi and VanBrocklin all contributing to a final time of 2:56.85 and a bronze medal.
"I'm really happy with how we competed today," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "It was by no means our best meet score-wise, but we were mentally tough and didn't miss many dives. The first event was a little rough, but everyone responded really well in the second event."
Diving In
- On the 1m for the men, Helling placed the highest for the Utes, coming in with the bronze medal. His biggest contributing dive to his overall score of 315.55 was his inward 2 ½ tuck, which brought in 63.55 points. On 3m, Helling finished in fourth with a score of 343.90.
- Elias Petersen was right behind Helling, taking fourth place on 1m. His overall score was 306.40. Taking charge on 3m, Petersen finished with the bronze medal and a total of 343.90. His second dive was the biggest contributor, a front 2 ½ with a full twist that added 66 points to his overall score.
- In eighth-place, Attila Bernatsky finished with 214.25 on 1m. On 3m, he finished in ninth-place.
- On the women's side, on 3m, Holly Waxman ranked the highest for Utah, coming in with a silver medal and a score of 286.35. Waxman would go on to earn the bronze in the Ute sweep on 1m with a score of 273.15.
- Kathryn Grant wasn't far behind Waxman on 3m, scoring 257.55 and finishing in fourth-place. Grant led a Utah sweep on 1m, finishing her list with 275.75.
- Earning fifth-place on 3m, Callie Eaglestone finished the event with 253.65, less than three points behind Grant. Eaglestone locking in on 1m, taking the silver and finishing just 0.75 behind Grant.
"I like how we're able to move on and focus on what was ahead of us rather than what was behind us," said Marschner. "The women going 1-2-3 on 1m against a couple of tough teams is very impressive and it was good to see, even if we weren't at our absolute best."
Looking Ahead
After today's meet, the swimmers plan to travel the University of Wyoming for a Utes vs. Cowboys face off on Jan. 31.
