Utes win 17 total events against Cowboys in Green River

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. – The University of Utah men's swimming and diving opened the 2025-26 campaign with a win over the Wyoming Cowboys at Green River High School.

The men of Utah topped the Cowboys, 196-104, winning 11 total events on the afternoon, while the women's team fell, 172-128. The Utes came out victorious in 17 total events on the day.

"I think we raced pretty well considering it was our first meet of the season," head coach Jonas Persson said. "Unfortunately we were not able to win on the women's side and will have to address that moving forward, but the men stepped up and got the win.

Caleb Gallagher logged 20 points for the Utes, thanks to wins in both the 100 and 200 Breast, while Davis Stachelek and Evan VanBrocklin each logged a pair of individual wins and some relay victories.

On the women's side, Rylee McColley led the charge with 18 points for the Utes thanks to a pair of victories, while Megan Legarth, Erin Palmer, Ella Derby and Teagan Steinmetz all logged double-digit points

"We are in a good spot for our home meet next week, and I'm looking forward to us continuing to develop and get better," Persson added.

Attila Bernatsky shined for head diving coach Richard Marschner, winning the men's 3m with a list total of 281.25 and placed second in the 1m. Alex Just placed second in the 3m in his Utah debut as well.

"We did a really nice job on the boards today," Marschner said. "I'm thrilled about how we did and really excited to see that Attila got his first college 'W' as well."

Annalise Shrader and Cierra Cole also showed promise in their collegiate debut. Cole finished second in the women's 3m and third in the 1m, while Shrader logged a second-place result in the 1m and placed fourth in the 3m.

"It was a long drive to get here and I was really, really happy with both Annalise and Cierra, they showed some really good stuff today. We're making really good corrections all around, the scores may not be overly impressive today but they're really doing the right things to make those scores pop down the line.

In the Pool
Men's

Gallagher won the 100 Breast with a 55.93 and the 200 Breast with a 2:02.82. He also won the 200 medley relay alongside Nolan Dunkel, Jackson Kehler and Davis Stachelek with a time of 1:29.32.
Dunkel also won the 100 Back with a 48.93.
Stachelek finished first in both the 50 Free (20.89) and 100 Free (45.60).
VanBrocklin won the 100 Fly with a time of 49.13 and the 200 Fly with a 1:50.08.
Stachelek, VanBrocklin, Finn Winkler and Ethan Moore placed first in the 400 Free relay with a 2:51.30.
Strahinja Maslo claimed the 200 IM title and placed third in the 100 Breast.

Women's

McColley swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 with a 1:04.21 and the 200 with a 2:19.36.
Derby won the 200 IM on the women's side with a 2:06.80 time and finished third in the 200 Breast.
Legarth claimed the 100 Back crown with a 56.75.
Palmer won the 50 Free with a 22.73 and finished second in the 100 Free.
Steinmetz finished second in both the 100 and 200 Breast as well as the 200 IM

On the Boards

Bernatsky was the lone Utah diver to win on the day, taking the men's 3m with a list total of 281.25 and placed second in the 1m.
Alex Just placed second in the 3m in his Utah debut with a 262.20.
Cole logged a 246.45 to finish second in the women's 3m and a 218.25 to place third in the 1m.
Shrader debuted with a 227.03 in the women's 1m to take second.
