Utes Improve to 8-2 overall, 5-2 in Big 12 Conference Play

WACO, Texas – The 13th-ranked Utah football team used explosive plays on both the offensive and defensive end of the ball to its advantage on the way to a 55-28 win over the Baylor Bears in front of 38,186 fans at McLane Stadium on Saturday night.

The Utes improved to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 Conference play with the victory.

Utah scored rushing touchdowns of 74, 67 and 64 yards and added a 65-yard pick-six, needing just 59 plays to rack up 483 yards of total offense while averaging 8.2 yards per play.

The Utes were once again powered by their rushing attack, gaining 380 yards on the ground. Utah has now rushed for 300-plus yards three times this season and has eclipsed 200 yards in nine of 10 games, including each of the last six outings.

Byrd Ficklin paced the Utah rushing attack, tallying six carries for 166 yards and two scores - one from 74 yards out and another from 67 yards - to break his own program record for single-game rushing yards by a quarterback. The true freshman has rushed for 150-plus yards twice this season after posting 151 yards on the ground in his first career start against Colorado last month. Ficklin also completed 2-of-3 passes for 23 yards.

Wayshawn Parker eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the third game in a row, rushing 15 times for 129 yards and a score while also bringing in a five-yard touchdown grab. NaQuari Rogers carried the ball six times for 27 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Utah rushed for five total touchdowns on the night, the third time this season that the Utes have run for five or more scores. This is only the second season in the Whittingham era that Utah has three or more such games.

Devon Dampier made his ninth start at quarterback this season, completing 6-of-13 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns and rushing eight times for 23 yards. His favorite target of the night was
Dallen Bentley, who brought in three passes for 48 yards and a score, while fellow tight end JJ Buchanan hauled in three for 41 yards.

Utah's defense allowed 522 yards of offense on the night, the most surrendered so far this season, but was able to force a pair of turnovers and stopped Baylor three times on fourth down. The Utes tallied a pair of sacks, seven tackles for loss and matched their season high with five pass break-ups while holding the Bears to just 5-of-17 on third-down tries.

Johnathan Hall and Blake Cotton led the Utes with six stops each and Levani Damuni was just behind them with five, including a career-high three tackles for loss. Kash Dillon made a career-best five tackles to go with a sack and Lander Barton added his eighth sack of the season and two TFLs.

Elijah Davis recorded three tackles to go along with his first interception of the season, a 65-yard pick-six in the first quarter. It marked the Utes' 50th interception returned for a touchdown since 2004, the most in the FBS during that span. Trey Reynolds also added an interception to go with a pair of stops.

All eight of Utah's wins this season have been by 25-plus points.

Utah returns to Salt Lake City and Rice-Eccles Stadium for the regular season home finale vs. Kansas State (5-5, 4-3 Big 12) on Saturday, Nov. 22. Kickoff time will be determined on Sunday.
