Spencer Fano named Offensive Lineman of the Year, Dampier tabbed Offensive Newcomer of the Year
IRVING, Texas — After finishing off a 10-2 regular season with five consecutive victories, the 15th-ranked Utah football team was honored with several Big 12 Conference awards on Thursday.
Â
Offensive tackle Spencer Fano, a finalist for the Outland Trophy, was named the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year and First Team All-Conference, while quarterback Devon Dampier earned Offensive Newcomer of the Year and Third Team All-Conference honors after throwing for 2,180 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushing for 687 yards and seven scores.
Â
The Utes had three players named to the Big 12 First Team, with offensive tackle Caleb Lomu, who has allowed just eight pressures and six hurries without a sack in 294 pass blocking opportunities, and defensive end John Henry Daley joining Fano. Daley was tied for the FBS lead with 17.5 TFL and ranked second in the country with 11.5 sacks before suffering a season-ending injury on Nov. 22.
Â
Utah's defense earned two Second Team All-Big 12 slots in defensive end Logan Fano and defensive back Smith Snowden. Fano played a key role opposite Daley on the defensive line, totaling 44 tackles with 7.5 TFL and two passes broken up. Snowden has started all 12 games and leads the team with nine passes defended, while adding 37 tackles. Â
Â
Two more Utes were lauded with Third Team All-Conference recognition in running back Wayshawn Parker and tight end Dallen Bentley. Parker came on strong the second half of the season, stringing together four straight 100+-yard performances on the ground on the way to 931 yards and six scores in 12 games. Bentley finished second on the team in receptions (42), receiving yards (514) and touchdown receptions (5).
Â
Utah earned nine honorable mention nods, including the rest of the Joe Moore Award Semifinalist offensive line in center Jaren Kump and guards Michael Mokofisi and Tanoa Togiai. Wide receiver Ryan Davis rounded out the Utes' offensive honors. Defensively, linebackers Lander Barton and Johnathan Hall, and defensive back Jackson Bennee received the accolade.
