LAS VEGAS – Eleven University of Utah swimmers and six divers split to conquer the University of Nevada, Las Vegas First Chance meet and the UCLA Last Chance meet, with six swimmers bringing home a gold and all six divers earning a post-season meet cut, on Saturday.
Eleven Utes made an appearance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas First Chance Meet, looking to beat their personal bests.
"I was very pleased with how our athletes competed today in the different racing situations," said assistant coach
Brody Lewis. "We had a lot of time trial swims that were solo efforts, but that didn't stop us from being motivated and executing details in a new situation."
Going Home with a Gold
- Will Woodall started the meet off for the Utes with a gold medal, swimming the 50-yard freestyle and touching in at 20.05.
- In the 200-yard freestyle, Kellen Cameron secured the gold with his swim of 1:38.72.
- Jackson Kehler took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking a time of 49.08.
- For the women, Lauren Greenwell finished her 100-yard breaststroke at 1:05.27, walking away with the gold.
- Layton Sealman touched the wall at 54.25, finishing the 100-yard breaststroke first-place.
- Securing a gold for the women, Abby Pope swam the 200-yard butterfly in 2:04.42.
Just Kept Swimming
- In the 50-free, Davis Stachelek clocked in for the silver medal with a 20.21.
- Jake Baker finished in third-place in the 200-free, touching the wall at 1:43.78.
- In the 100-back, Nate Decker dropped half a second for the silver medal, coming in at 48.31.
- Landon Nava secured the silver in the 100-breast with a time of 55.21.
- In the same race, Gannon Flynn took fourth after swimming a 56.38.
"Overall, I'm excited for each individual's future and thankful for all their efforts and contributions to our program's success this season," said Lewis.
In California, the divers took on UCLA for their Last Chance Meet, where all six were able to secure their platform qualifying score.
In the Zone(s)
- Attila Bernatsky's goal on tower was 300 points and his preliminary list scored 344.55. Bernatsky walked away from finals having earned the NCAA Zones cut for a second time in one day and the top spot on the podium.
- Sydney Kowalski finished her tower event with the silver medal and a final score of 255.68, successfully qualifying for the platform event at Zones.
- Callie Eaglestone reached her NCAA Zones cut in both her preliminary list and her finals list. Showing her consistency, she finished with 225.83 in prelims and 225.68 in finals.
- Kathryn Grant took the gold on tower after she finished finals with 279.15, averaging 44.83 points per round.
- Holly Waxman finished with 240.75 after her six-dive list in finals averaged 51 points each dive.
- On the men's platform event, Jesco Helling finished prelims as the top-seed with a final score of 365.25.
"I am so proud of everyone for hitting their zone scores," said assistant dive coach Gabby Logozzo, "It boosts confidence heading into Big 12s and keeps everyone excited for conference."
Looking Ahead
The swimmers and divers will meet back in Salt Lake City to prepare to travel for Federal Way, Wash. where they'll take part in their first Big 12 Conference Championship on Feb. 25- March 1.
