The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah baseball team is 7-1 for the second straight season and looks to keep rolling this weekend with a split four-game weekend in Riverside, California. The Utes will play a single game at California Baptist on Friday afternoon, before playing two games Saturday. Utah will begin the day at UC Riverside before going across town for a second game at CBU, then the weekend wraps on Sunday with a single rematch at UC Riverside.
- Utah is coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Tony Gwynn Legacy series. The team shut out San Diego State 8-0, before walking off Seattle in a 4-3 comeback victory on Saturday to improve to an undefeated 6-0.
- After a tough setback to UC San Diego last Sunday night, Utah bounced back on Monday with a 9-1 triumph over Long Beach State.
- Utah's team batting average clocks in at .308 entering this weekend, ranking fourth in the Big 12 Conference. The team's 25 doubles lead the league and are No. 7 nationally. It has helped the club push across 59 runs with opponents scoring 21 runs to date.
- On the mound, the pitching staff has an ERA of 2.50 through eight games. Utah ranks third in the Big 12 and 21st across college baseball.
- Right-handed pitcher Colter McAnelly earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for a second straight week. McAnelly went seven innings in his start against San Diego State, striking out 10 batters. The leadoff batter for SDSU never reached against McAnelly and he made it to the seventh inning before walking anyone or allowing a baserunner to reach third base.
- Right fielder Kaden Carpenter hit .375 in the four-game swing with three doubles, six RBI and two runs scored. During the UC San Diego game on Sunday, Carpenter also made a diving catch that appeared on SportsCenter Top 10 as the No. 8 play of the day.
- Defensively, shortstop Core Jackson flashed the leather routinely during the Tony Gwynn Legacy; Jackson finished the weekend with seven assists and seven putouts all while hitting .300 and scoring two runs.
- The Utes began the 2025 season with a four-game road sweep of Pepperdine, outscoring the Waves by a combined score of 30-8. After a 10-inning victory in the season opener, Utah followed with three more wins, each by at least five runs.
- Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah's fifth affiliation since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-98), Mountain West (1999-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since joining the WAC, Utah has won five conference championships, most recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
- Utah won a pair of games last season against California Baptist as part of what became a nine-game winning streak for the Utes. The last time that Utah faced UC Riverside was during the 2018 season, winning the finale of a three-game series.
- The Utes finished 2024 with 33 wins, tying the second-most in program history. Despite being picked 10th in the Pac-12 Preseason poll, Henderson's club entered the D1Baseball.com top 25 in late April and was two games out of first place entering the penultimate Pac-12 series.
