FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – During the first day of the NCAA Zone E competition, University of Utah dive's
Elias Petersen and
Callie Eaglestone qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championship, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. on Monday afternoon.
On the first day of the NCAA Zone E Championships, two Utes qualified for a spot at the NCAA Championship. With the top 18 of each event moving on to finals, four Utes pushed on for a second list.
The scores at Zones are cumulative, meaning the divers carry their preliminary scores over and the finals totals are added on top. In today's event, the top six men in finals qualified for NCAAs, while the women were aiming for the top eight.
"We had a really nice first day here and getting both Callie and Elias in on day one is a huge accomplishment," said head diving coach
Richard Marschner. "Jesco and Holly are set up really nicely for the next two days as they are both comfortably in the top 12."
On the 1m
- Junior Elias Petersen was the first to punch his ticket to NCAAs after he placed in the top six of the 1m event. Coming in sixth, Petersen finished with a total score of 673.60. The Malmo, Sweden native averaged 55.77 points on each round, with his first round, an inward 2 ½ tuck adding 58.90 points to his total score.
- Graduate Jesco Helling finished his preliminary list in the top nine, which successfully sent him to finals. Helling finished his one-meter event in eighth, moving up a slot with a total score of 632.55. Though Helling did not place within the top six on this event, he will have the opportunity to compete 1m at NCAAs if he qualifies on 3m or platform because he was within the top 12.
On the 3m
- Freshman Callie Eaglestone earned her first career NCAA appearance after finishing her 3m list in fifth-place. She bumped into her final placement after scoring 63 points on her final dive, a front 2 ½ pike with a full twist and finished with a total of 597.15.
- Senior Holly Waxman just missed the qualification, finishing in 10th-place with a score of 582.55. Because she finished in the top 12, if she qualifies on a different board, the Leeds, England native will be allowed to compete three-meter at the NCAA Championship.
- Junior Kathryn Grant finished her preliminary list with a score of 232.80 and senior Sydney Kowalski wasn't far behind with a score of 192.80.
"This meet is always so tough and I am really proud of how everyone competed, even though things didn't go exactly as planned," said Marschner. "We are a very resilient and mentally tough team and I am certain that no other team comes to this meet more prepared than we are. Tomorrow we have another great opportunity to add some more events and athletes to our NCAA schedule."
Looking Ahead
Competition for the divers continues tomorrow, with the women taking on the platform and the men competing on the 3m springboard at 12:30 M.T. in Federal Way, Wash.
