Utah Dominates Singles Play to Defeat Mountaineers 4-2

MORGANTOWN, W.V. — The University of Utah women's tennis team clinched a 4-2 victory over West Virginia on Thursday. The win over the Mountaineers marks the Utes second victory in conference play, moving their overall record to 7-8, and 2-4 in the Big 12.
Utah delivered a dominant showing in singles play, securing four victories to clinch the match over the Mountaineers.
Doubles
Utah started slowly against West Virginia, as the Mountaineers secured the doubles point with wins on the No. 2. Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie defeated Lyla Byers and Susannah Su 6-3 in the No. 3 to keep the Utes in the running for the doubles point advantage.Â
Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts put up a strong fight at the No. 1 spot against West Virginia's Mille Haagensen and Julie Bousseau taking the match into a tiebreak but ultimately fell 7-6 (6) giving the Moutaineers the doubles point.Â
Singles
Sara Akid set the tone for Utah with straight-set victories at No. 2. Akid defeated Boussea 6-4, 6-4 to tie the overall match up at 1-1. WVU answered by picking up a win at No. 4 to keep a 2-1 lead over Utah.Â
Kamper replied with commanding straight-set victories at No. 1. After a competitive first set, Kamper found her rhythm, cruising to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Haagensen.
The overall match was all tied up at 2-2 when Kaila Barskdale triumphed over Michaela Kucharova with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.
Lolofie clinched the match for Utah with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on No. 6 to take down West Virginia's Susannah Su.Â
Samantha Horwood was up 7-6, 3-2 against Lyla Byers on No. 5 before the match was left unfinished.
NEXT UP
The Utes will continue their road series as they head to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats on March 22 at 11 a.m. They will then return home for matches against Kansas (March 27) and Iowa State (March 29) at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
