SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team was defeated by Arizona State in an 18-6 ballgame on Sunday in the three-game series finale at Smith's Ballpark.
Batting leadoff and playing second base for the first time this season,
Austen Roellig went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Jake Long and
Jack Kleveno each contributed a pair of hits out of the Nos. 8-9 spots, with Kleveno scoring two runs and driving in one more.
Utah trailed 5-4 after four innings and remained within two runs at seventh inning stretch, but the Sun Devils hung a seven-spot in the eighth inning and five more in the ninth to bring the game to its final score.
The Utes answered an early ASU sac fly with a single run in the home half of the first.
Core Jackson reached on a fielder's choice, took third when
Tyler Quinn doubled and scored when
Cameron Gurney grounded into a fielder's choice of his own. Roellig would drive in Kleveno in the second inning for a 2-1 lead, popping a single through the left side.
Though the Sun Devils would pull back in front in the third inning, Utah netted a pair in the fourth.
Santino Panaro laid down a safety squeeze to score Long before the lineup turned over to Roellig, who laced another single to score Kleveno once again.
Long had a hard-hit RBI single in the eighth inning that brought
Kaden Carpenter home and Kleveno reached on a fielder's choice as Gurney scored Utah's final run of the ballgame.
Lucas Boesen took the mound in relief of starter
Cameron Nielson (2-2), with Boesen tossing 3.1 innings of four-hit, one-run ball with two strikeouts. Boesen did not walk anyone and the pitching staff allowed just four walks total, but Arizona State relied on hot bats throughout the game to tally 23 hits.
