SCOUTING THE WEEKEND COMPETITION
- CSU Northridge (2-4) is coming off a weekend playing in the Battle for LA weekend competition. Over the weekend the Matadors went winless, but went toe-to-toe with three ranked teams. They dropped two matches to No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 LMU both by a score of 0-5, but they put up a valiant effort versus the No. 16 Washington Huskies. CSUN ultimately fell 2-3 vs. UW, and the match was decided by a final-pairing third-set loss. CSUN also lost to Pepperdine with a final score of 2-3. Overall, the Matadors are coming in hungry for some wins after taking many close losses to great programs.
- This will be the second time Utah has matched up with Santa Clara (4-4) in the 2025 campaign. SCU is fresh off a successful weekend in the Battle for the Bay series. The Broncos won three of their four weekend tests, losing one to No. 5 Stanford. They beat San Francisco, San Jose State and Pacific all very decisively. The last time Santa Clara took on Utah on February 23rd, Utah won by a score of 3-2. Santa Clara is looking for some wins this weekend to get their record to above the .500 mark.
UTAH GOES 2-2 OVER THE FIU WEEKEND
Last weekend, the Utes took the cross-country travel journey to go compete against some very highly touted opponents at the FIU Weekend in Miami, Fla. Against No. 12 FAU and No. 17 FIU, Utah took two losses both by a score of 1-4. On Saturday, Utah got back in the win column with wins over Southern Miss and Palm Beach Atlantic, pushing Utah's season record to 6-2, only the second time Utah has started their season with a record of that caliber. Coach Whicker when asked about her takeaways from the weekend, "I'm happy with how our team competed this weekend. They stepped up in the heat and early match times. Coming from the west coast, that was an added challenge. We had a couple nice wins and I'm proud of how we battled against a couple top ranked teams. As we gain the confidence to finish out those matches, I think we can get some big wins."
GRIFFIN AND VEZZANI REMAIN DOMINANT
Utah's No. 2 pair of
Langley Griffin and
Bella Vezzani have been on a tear in 2025, posting a record of 7-1. In their one loss versus No. 12 FAU, they lost in a narrow third-set loss. Beyond that loss, they have won all other matches in straight sets. So far in their first season as a pair, these two have shown to be a solid pairing.
BUILDING ON EARLY SUCCESS
- Utah's No. 1 pair, Katie McAlister and Quincy Stephens, took their first losses of the year versus No. 12 FAU and No. 17 FIU, but added two more victories to their season tally on Saturday, Mar. 1, including a thrilling three-set victory versus Southern Miss.
- The No. 3 pair of Ellyn Collins and Kylie Pitzak had a very quality win over No. 12 FAU, giving Utah it's only pair win versus FAU, preventing the sweep. This pair now is 7-1 on the season.
HEAD COACH BRENDA WHICKER
Coach Whicker enters her ninth season at the helm of Utah beach volleyball. She is coming off the winningest season in program history finishing with a record of 19-16, with a first-round Pac-12 Tournament victory over Oregon. So far in 2025, she has coached Utah to one of their most successful starts in program history, starting with a 6-2 record. Her Utah squad got to compete against two ranked opponents over the FIU Weekend tournament. Both ended in losses but valuable experience against the upper echelon of NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball was gained, along with two crucial pair wins. Whicker was a volleyball player at Utah under current volleyball head coach Beth Launiere from 1994-97. She holds the record for most aces in Utah volleyball history and is one of six players in Utah volleyball history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career while playing for Utah.
UTAH BEACH CLASSIC
Utah's lone home competitions are set for March 28-29, when the Utes host the fourth edition of the Utah Beach Classic. This year, UC Davis, Boise State, Oregon and Big 12 opponent Arizona will join Utah for the weekend in Salt Lake City. The Utes will host at the Lassonde Sports Court on the Utah campus.
