Utah returns to Smith’s Ballpark Thursday to open series vs. BYU
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Utah baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 11 West Virginia on Saturday at Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Today's doubleheader was scheduled in an attempt to beat inclement weather forecasted in Morgantown on Sunday. The series is now complete and leaves Sunday as an open date for both teams.
Game 1
West Virginia 6, Utah 4
Cameron Gurney drove in two runs and the pair of Austen Roellig and Tyler Quinn each went 2-for-5 but the Utes were unable to capitalize on chances late in the day's opening contest. Core Jackson and Matt Flaharty each doubled in the game.
Utah had the tying run in scoring position in the eighth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but the Utes were unable to even up WVU.
Jackson sparked the Utah bats in the first inning with a one-out double. He got a great jump on a steal of third base before scoring on an infield single from Quinn.
WVU took a 4-1 lead after two innings, capped off by a three-run homer. Quinn would get one run back for the Utes in the fourth frame, leading off with a base hit, moving up on a hit by pitch and walk, then scoring on a sac fly from Flaharty.
The Utes scored a pair in the fifth inning thanks to a clutch two-out hit. Santino Panaro led off with a walk, ending up on third with a single from Austen Roellig. Roellig moved to second on a Core Jackson groundout, before Gurney popped a first-pitch single through the left side to bring in two runs.
Merit Jones pitched 7.2 innings and struck out five batters with just two walks, but received the loss (2-4).
Game 2
West Virginia 14, Utah 4 (8 innings)
Utah was unable to answer a pair of big innings by the Mountaineers and the game was called after eight innings and two weather delays.
Core Jackson hit a two-run home run and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, plus Jake Long added a 2-for-4 performance. Austen Roellig also doubled and scored.
WVU put some space between the clubs with a four-run second inning and added a five-spot in the fourth for a 10-3 advantage. Utah would tally its final run of the contest when Jackson scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Cameron Nielson (2-3) went three innings in his start.
