SALT LAKE CITY – The Colorado Rockies have signed left-handed pitcher and University of Utah baseball alumnus
Bryson Van Sickle (2022-24) to a minor league contract. He was assigned to the ACL Rockies in the Arizona Complex League.
Van Sickle, who is a native of Eagle Mountain, Utah, began the current professional season with the Ogden Raptors in the Pioneer League. Though he did not receive a decision, all three of his starts went five or more innings. He totaled 15.2 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts with the Raptors.
Collegiately, Van Sickle came to the Utes as a transfer out of Labette Community College. When he arrived on campus before the 2022 season, the southpaw noted that he had been a lifelong Utah fan and that his pride for the U made it a perfect fit. He went on to make 48 career appearances with 25 starts, finishing 11-6 with a 4.06 ERA in 192.2 innings pitched. His 170 strikeouts place him narrowly outside the top 10 in recorded Utah history.
His breakthrough came as a redshirt senior in 2024. After being named the Saturday starter at the beginning of the season, Van Sickle moved into the Friday night role midway through the year. Van Sickle ultimately made 15 starts, finishing 5-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 69 strikeouts on the way to being named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and ABCA All-America Third-Team. His ERA led the Pac-12 and ranked 12th in the nation.
For the 2024 season, Van Sickle ranked among the Pac-12 leaders in several categories including innings pitched (3
rd; 94.1) opponent batting average (4
th; .221), WHIP (2
nd; 1.06), walks allowed per nine (3
rd; 2.0) and hits allowed per nine (4
th; 7.54). In conference play, his 66.1 innings pitched led the league while he was second in conference-only ERA (2.44).
His time as the ace included a "Maddux" against Arizona State; that is, a shutout on less than 100 pitches. He needed just 82 pitches to three-hit the Sun Devils, striking out eight and walking none. The win that night put Utah in position to later take the series, flipping the script after the Utes had lost their last nine games at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Later in the 2024 season, Van Sickle tossed another complete game with his performance at home against Arizona. He capped off his Utah career with an outstanding outing in the Pac-12 Tournament vs. Oregon (May 22), going seven innings with one earned run allowed on four hits and a walk, striking out six.
Van Sickle made 15 relief appearances in 2022, tallying a 3-0 record out of the bullpen during his first season with the program.
He was a first-team All-State selection at Westlake High School, posting a 5-0 record on the mound his senior year with a 1.25 ERA.
