SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Volleyball opened the 2025 season with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 25-15, 23-25) match victory over the No. 24 Dayton Flyers and they did it with style.
Junior outside hitter
Kamryn Gibadlo set a new career-high in kills (21), sophomore libero
Levani Key-Powell set a career-high in digs (23), and sophomore setter
Isabelle Marco set career-highs in blocks (3) and assists (44). Notably, Marco was the first player for the program to have over 40 assists since Viktoria Wahlgren versus Colorado on Nov. 24, 2023.
Freshman outside hitter
Devyn Wiest made a splash in her debut with the Utes leading all players with seven kills through the first two sets of the match.
Finally, not to be outdone by her players,
Beth Launiere marked her 1,100
th game as the head coach of the Utes.
SET ONE
Back-to-back kills from senior middle blocker
Emrie Moea'i and Wiest, along with a service ace from
Neea-Maria Joki got Utah off to the right start going up 3-0 on the Flyers early. Dayton got within one but never took the lead. Moea'i, Marco, and Gibadlo all contributed service aces that put Utah over Dayton 6-4, 8-5, and 12-7 through set one. Gibadlo and Wiest put a bow on the first round with two straight kills from Gibadlo and Wiest to take the set, 25-14.
SET TWO
Dayton kept things close through most of set two, but Wiest's kill off
Leah Wilton-LaBoy's serve and assist moved the Utes ahead 18-13 over the Flyers. A few plays later Wiest set up Utah for the set point with a kill putting them up 24-18 while Moea'i finished set two for the Utes, 25-20.
SET THREE
Utah and Dayton battled back and forth through set three tying the game 10 times before the Flyers pulled ahead 20-18 to push set four.
SET FOUR
Early in the set, the Utes and Flyers continued to keep the game close, but Utah found their groove building an 11-8 lead off four straight kills from Gibadlo. Utah took a 23-15 lead over Dayton off of Gibadlo's final kill of the night that set her new career high. The Utes benefitted from two attack errors from the Flyers to give them their first victory of the 2025 season.
STANDOUT STATS
- Launiere coached in her 1,100th game, leading Utah to a 3-1 ranked victory over the No. 24 Dayton Flyers.
- Gibadlo led the Utes on the attack tonight, posting a career-high 21 kills. She completed this feat while hitting an efficient .370%, which led all Utah players. Her 10 digs were the second most for Utah.
- Key-Powell achieved a career-high posting 23 digs.
- Marco posted two career-highs, with 3 blocks and 44 assists. She is the first player since Nov. 24, 2023 to have 40+ assists in a match.

Utah returns for day two of the Utah Classic on Saturday, Aug. 30, taking on Lafayette at 11 a.m. MT. The Utes will bring the weekend to a close on Sunday, Aug. 31 with their final match of the classic against former conference foe Washington State at 12 p.m. MT
