SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Utah baseball team was defeated 7-1 by the UCSB Gauchos on Saturday evening at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Utah's 2026 record is now 4-4.
Two of Utah's three safeties on the day came courtesy of
Jake Long, who reached on an infield single in the seventh and dropped an RBI double into center in the ninth. That knock plated
Cameron Gurney, who finished the evening with a single and two walks.
Luke Jacobs reached base twice as well, being hit by a pitch in the first and drawing a walk in the eighth.
The Gauchos started the scoring with four runs in the second thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a two-run double off the bat of Cade Goldstein. They would add another when Jonathan Mendez stole home in the third.
Sammy Cova, who entered in relief in the fourth, proceeded to hold the deficit at 5-0 through the sixth. For three consecutive stanzas, he threw up zeroes, including a stretch of seven-in-a-row set down at one point. Unfortunately for Cova and the Utes, UCSB found a way to push across two more in the seventh before
Ian Culver capped the evening with two scoreless frames.
