Utes Stay Undefeated at Home with a 4-2 Win over BYU

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah women's tennis team defeated in-state rival BYU 4-2 Saturday in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes posted strong singles performances to clinch the match victory.

The Utes are undefeated on home courts this season with a 6-0 record.

DOUBLES
In doubles action, the Cougars rallied for two quick wins on courts No. 3 and No. 2 to capture the doubles point advantage.

Utah's Sara Akid and Emma Valletta were up 5-4 on court No. 1 before the match was ultimately left abandoned.

SINGLES
In singles action, Utah's Kaila Barksdale got it done with a 6-1, 6-0 win over BYU's YuYun Chen at the No. 4 spot to tie the overall match 1-1.

The Cougars answered with a win at the No. 6 spot putting them up 2-1.

The Utes quickly responded by adding three straight wins on the board to clinch the match. At the No. 2 spot, Utah's Sara Akid battled against BYU's Kendall Kovick. Akid downed Kovick 6-4, 7-5 to tie things up in the overall match with a 2-2 score.

All eyes were on Courts No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 as all three matches pushed into a third set.

Utah's Emmie Moore won her first set 6-3 but dropped her second set 6-4 to BYU's Sue Yan Tan at the No. 3 spot. Moore got to work and won her third set 6-0 to put the Utes up 3-2 over the Cougars.

At court No. 1, Utah's Emma Kamper won her first set 6-0 against BYU's Gracie Levelston but dropped her second set 6-4. Kamper won her third set 6-1 and clinched the overall match for the Utes to extend the Utes' home win streak.

The Utes overall record is now 7-5 on the season and 1-2 in Big 12 action.

UP NEXT
The Utes will travel down to St. George, Utah to face the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a nonconference match up on Mar. 9 before returning home to take on West Virginia Mar. 12 and Cincinnati on Mar. 14.
