Utes Claim 6-1 Victory Over Trailblazers in Nonconference Duel

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Utah women's tennis team defeated in-state foe Utah Tech 6-1 in a nonconference matchup Monday morning. The Utes clinched the doubles point advantage and maintained momentum into singles action to secure the overall match victory.

The Utes are now 8-5 on the season and remain 1-2 in Big 12 play.

DOUBLES
In doubles action, the Utes captured victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to secure the doubles point. On the No. 2 court, Utah's Kaila Barksdale and Emmie Moore defeated Utah Tech's Maya Inouye and Nutsa Tsintsadze 6-1. At the No. 3 spot, Utah's Emma Valletta and Kamea Medora picked up a 6-0 victory over Trailblazers' Cameron Hendrix and Ilse Fernanda Elechiguerra to clinch the doubles point advantage.

The match on court No. 1 between Utah's Emma Kamper and Andjelija Markovic and Utah Tech's Mariana Zurita Berdecio and Ana Gutierrez Sampere was ultimately left unfinished with the Utes leading 4-3.

SINGLES
In singles action, the Utes posted strong victories to clinch the match. At the No. 1 spot, Utah's Sara Akid downed Trailblazers' Mariana Zurita Berdecio 6-1, 6-0. Utah's Kaila Barksdale posted a strong 6-0, 6-0 victory against Utah Tech's Ana Gutierrez Sampere at the No. 2 spot.

At the No. 3 spot, Utah's Emma Valletta defeated Trailblazers' Maya Inouye with 6-1, 6-1 scores. Then Dylan Lolofie defeated Trailblazers' Nutsa Tsintsadze 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 4.

On court No. 5, Utah's Kamea Medora fell in the first set 3-6 against Utah Tech's Cameron Hendrix, but Medora bounced back in the next two sets, where she posted 6-1 and 10-5 scores to claim the match victory.

UP NEXT
The Utes will return home to take on Big 12 opponents West Virginia (Mar. 12) and Cincinnati (Mar. 14) before traveling to Lubbock, Texas to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Mar. 19.
