SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team defeated in-state foe Utah Valley 9-5 Tuesday night on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, sweeping the three-game season series with the Wolverines.
Â
The Utes (24-19) were hot off the bat with 11 hits, including five home runs as the clubs combined for seven long balls in the game. The five homers for Utah were the most for the team since an April 18, 2023 win at BYU. The second inning saw
Matt Flaharty,
Luke Jacobs and
Daniel Arambula all go yard, marking the first three-homer inning for the Utes since the 2022 season.
Â
Blake Eckerle had a stand-up double in the second inning, rounding out six extra-base hits for Utah on the night.
Â
Individually, four players had multi-hit performances. Jacobs had his first multi-homer game as a Utah Ute and finished with three RBI, while he now has seven home runs on the season.
Cal Miller left the yard in the fifth inning for his sixth round-tripper. Flaharty homered for the second straight game and now totals four for the year while Arambula now has five home runs.
Â
Miller extended his on-base streak to 20 straight games, the longest active streak on the team.
Â
Five different Utah pitchers saw action on the mound.
Ryan Kittredge dealt the first two innings and struck out five of his first six batters faced, including fanning the side in order in the first inning.
Dylan Gazaway (4-1) and
Demitri Diamant followed with two innings apiece, then
Kaden Soder and
Justin Abercrombie took the Utes home from there.
Â
In the field, the Utes had two double plays which brings the team to 45 on the season—tying for second-most in the Big 12 Conference.
Â
Jacobs rocketed a 413-foot home run to right-center field to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Out of the seven home runs Jacobs has hit this season, this marked his fourth to lead off the first inning.
Â
UVU briefly pulled in front in the second inning, but Flaharty evened up the score at 2-2 with a solo shot in the home half of the frame. Eckerle kept the momentum going with a stand-up double on a full count as Jacobs followed with a 400-foot blast to put the Utes up 4-2.
Â
Arambula got in on the fun with a home run of his own, tallying the scoreboard to 6-2 after two innings of play.
Â
The teams traded runs as the middle innings came on. Miller clubbed a 419-footer to right-center field in the bottom of the fifth. Miller and Utah's pitcher
Demitri Diamant came together the next inning to throw out the runner at second base.
Â
Soder did a nice job to get out of a seventh-inning situation in which he was faced with a runner at third and one out. He stood tall and answered with a strikeout and fly ball to get out of the inning with Utah ahead 8-4 at that point.
Â
Eckerle came through with a sac fly in the bottom of the seventh to score pinch runner
Zakye Hawkins and give the Utes some insurance.
