The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Fresh off a rivalry conference series win at BYU, the Utah baseball team continues the in-state flavor with a Tuesday night home game against Utah Valley at America First Ballpark. It'll be the final meeting of the teams for this regular season after the Utes won the first two contests. Utah won a 15-9 battle down in Orem on March 31 before pulling away for a 16-9 victory in SLC on April 21.
- Utah dropped its series opener at BYU last Thursday, with momentum swinging to the Cougars during a five-run bottom of the fifth inning. But the Utes quickly put the loss behind them and bounced back for an 8-1 victory to even up the series followed by an 8-3 triumph in the rubber match.
- First baseman Cameron Gurney hit .538 in the series with a double and five RBI, while never striking out in 14 total plate appearances. Gurney also had a hand in six of Utah's seven double plays, highlighting a defense that committed just one error on the weekend.
- Payton Riske tossed five innings for the win in Friday's middle game before Kaden Soder delievered three crucial innings of relief in the rubber match at BYU.
- The team's seven double plays led the Big 12 last week and were third-most in the country (Indiana State and Oregon State were tied for the lead with eight). Overall for the season, the Utes have turned 43 twin-killings, third in the Big 12. In league games Utah leads the Big 12 with 31 double plays.
- The Utes' bats continue to rank among the best in the Big 12 as the team brings a .308 batting average into Tuesday's game—ranking fourth in the conference and top-20 nationally. It is powered by Gurney (.376) and center fielder Jet Gilliam (.373), who rank seventh and eighth in the league, respectively, in average.
- Left fielder Jake Long has hit safely in 34 of the Utes' last 37 games (since Feb. 22). He is among the team's leaders in batting average (3rd; .363), slugging (1st; .631), RBIs (1st; 52) and home runs (1st; 10).
- With six Big 12 Conference games remaining over the next two weekends, the Utes find themselves in ninth place in the league standings. The top 12 teams will advance to the Big 12 Tournament presented by Allstate, which runs from May 19-23 in Surprise, Arizona.
- The Utes will head down to TCU this Friday through Sunday for the team's final road trip of the regular season.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
May 10, 2024 – Southpaw and Utah native Bryson Van Sickle tosses a complete game three-hitter in a 6-1 win over No. 17-ranked Arizona during a Friday matinee at Smith's Ballpark. Van Sickle had eight strikeouts in his final home start and went on to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year. With a Maddux performance earlier that season against Arizona State, Van Sickle is likely one of the few pitchers in history to toss a complete game in the same season against both Arizona and ASU.
