SALT LAKE CITY – A game expected to feature one of the Pac-12's top pitching matchups of the season lived up to the hype, as Utah southpaw
Bryson Van Sickle went the distance in a complete game three-hitter and helped the Utes to a 6-1 win over No. 17-nationally ranked Arizona on Friday at Smith's Ballpark.
With the win, Utah (31-16, 16-9 Pac-12) closed within a game of the Wildcats (30-18, 17-8 Pac-12) for first place in the conference standings.
Making what was likely his final regular season home start as a Ute, it was Van Sickle's (4-1) second time this season going the distance; the other came back on April 12 when he tossed a "Maddux" on the road at Arizona State. This time around, he struck out eight Wildcats and allowed one run on three hits and a pair of walks. It took 108 pitches from the native of Eagle Mountain, Utah—73 were strikes and helped Van Sickle retire the leadoff hitter in all nine innings.
With the performance, he became the first Utah pitcher since Stephen Fife in 2008 to toss multiple CGs in a season. He allowed only a walk in the first 3.2 innings of the game, then worked around a two-out triple to get out of the fourth inning still in a scoreless game.
Karson Bodily put Utah on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run, his second of the season. It came after
Drake Digiorno had a one-out single as part of a 3-for-4 day for Digiorno.
Arizona got one back with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, but the home side countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
Hunter Antillon singled with one out, then an error in the outfield allowed pinch runner
Dakota Duffalo to score. Two batters later,
Kai Roberts laced a base hit to score Antillon and move the score to 4-1 Utah.
Van Sickle worked a 1-2-3 top of the sixth. Then Bodily hit a sac fly in the bottom of the inning to score Digiorno on the heels of a leadoff double that had rolled into the Utes' bullpen.
Core Jackson drove in another run with a seventh-inning single that plated
Kaden Carpenter and brought the ballgame to its final score. Van Sickle had two strikeouts in the eighth and retired Arizona in order in the ninth, capped off by a liner to first base that Digiorno snared.
Bodily had his fourth multi-RBI game of the season while Jackson (23) and Antillon (20) extended their team-leading on-base streaks. The game took just two hours, three minutes to complete.
