SALT LAKE CITY – Kaden Carpenter clubbed his fourth home run of the season, but Arizona had three long balls of its own as the Utes fell in the middle contest of a three-game series, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.
The loss sets up a rubber game on Sunday night at 7 p.m. MT, with the Utes (31-17, 16-10 Pac-12) looking to inch back within a game of Arizona (31-18, 18-8 Pac-12) for first place in the Pac-12 Conference standings.
TJ Clarkson had an RBI double to get Utah on the board in the fourth inning and
Matt Flaharty had a two-bagger of his own, driving in
Karson Bodily in the ninth as the Utes looked to rally. An Arizona error put runners on the corners in the ninth and the tying run on deck, but in the end Utah was unable to complete the comeback effort.
Merit Jones (3-4) went five innings in his start and struck out three. From there,
Bransen Kuehl pitched three innings of one-run ball, handing off to
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola and
Brett Porthan down the stretch.
Arizona plated a run in each of the first two innings then added a three-spot in the visiting half of the fourth. It was in the bottom of the fourth that Utah inked its first hit off of Clark Candiotti;
Bruer Webster led off with a single. Then three batters later Clarkson laced the 1-1 pitch into the right field corner as the speedy Webster came all the way from first base to score.
In the seventh inning, Carpenter followed up a one-out single from
Landon Frei with his homer that landed past the right field walkway and near the Richards Street fence line.
Hunter Antillon added a single later in the inning as the Utes looked to build upon the homer, but a fly ball stranded him at first base.
The game marked Senior Day for the Utah Baseball program as the club recognized its nine-man Class of 2024 prior to the game. The group includes
Hunter Antillon,
Karson Bodily,
TJ Clarkson,
Randon Hostert,
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola,
Brett Porthan,
Kai Roberts,
Bryson Van Sickle and
Bruer Webster.
