This Weekend's Fan Experience Rundown
- Once again throughout the 2024 season, parking on Utah Baseball gamedays is free at Smith's Ballpark. Park in the lot on 13th South, directly North of home plate. Fans can also ride TRAX for free with a valid game ticket or University of Utah UCard—just hop on the Red, Blue or Green Lines to Ballpark Station.
- University of Utah students are always admitted to baseball games free of charge— just present a valid UCard at the Smith's Ballpark Ticket Office.
- Friday's matinee will be the final Fry-Day game of the season; the first 50 fans through the gates can claim a voucher for free fries. Visit the marketing table on the concourse behind home plate. Fans can also play Baseball Bingo throughout the afternoon.
- Be in the ballpark by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, as the Utah Baseball program thanks its nine-man senior class. The Utes will recognize Hunter Antillon, Karson Bodily, TJ Clarkson, Randon Hostert, Ernesto Lugo-Canchola, Brett Porthan, Kai Roberts, Bryson Van Sickle and Bruer Webster.
- Also on Saturday, while supplies last fans can pick up a free water bottle at the marketing table behind home plate. Kids are invited to come down on the field and run the bases postgame (this is subject to change based on timing).
- The Utes will celebrate Mother's Day in the ballpark on Sunday; it'll also be another Soda Sunday as fans can purchase souvenir sodas at half price. Free foam fingers will be available for fans while supplies last.
The First Pitch: Things to Know
Sitting two games out of first place in the Pac-12 Conference standings, the Utah Baseball team is preparing for a key three-game series against league-leading and No. 17-nationally ranked Arizona. It'll be the final home league series of the season for the Utes and runs from Friday through Sunday, May 10-12.
- Despite being picked to finish 10th in the Pac-12 Preseason Poll, the Utes find themselves in second place in the league standings and as recently as last week were tied for first. Utah has already clinched a spot in the 2024 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament, though seeding is far from settled. That will all shake out this weekend and next as teams play their final two conference series of the regular season.
- While the Utes fell out of the D1Baseball.com poll after being ranked No. 25 last week, the team is still receiving votes in both the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches polls. Utah has now received votes in the last six NCBWA weekly polls (since April 1) and last five Coaches Polls (since April 8).
- Last week's No. 25 ranking for Utah marked the first time that the club has been slotted in the five current major college baseball polls (D1Baseball.com, Baseball America, NCBWA, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches).
- Utah is looking to bounce back from a 11-8 setback at the hands of Utah Tech on Tuesday down in St. George. The Utes struck first with three doubles to take the early lead, but ultimately could not keep pace with six home runs by the home club.
- The win in the Oregon series finale (May 5) gave Utah its 30th victory of the season. It came in a total of 45 games, the fastest in school history. Previously, the 1997 team held that record doing so by reaching the mark in 47 games. The 2002 Utes were the last team to reach the 30-win mark.
- Core Jackson hit .417 in the Oregon series with a crucial three-run double on Sunday, while Tyler Quinn clubbed a three-run homer as the Utes got back on track following a doubleheader setback last Saturday. Colter McAnelly picked up the victory on the mound to close out the series.
- Jackson (.368) and Kai Roberts (.358) continue to lead Utah at the plate, holding the 1-2 spots in the batting order and owning two of the top four batting averages in the Pac-12. Roberts' 69 hits rank second the league and include a career-best 17 doubles which also sits fifth in the Pac-12.
- The speedy Roberts owns both the single-season (28) and career (61) program records for stolen bases at Utah. His 28 bags this season are a Pac-12 best, 16th in the nation. In his first three seasons combined, Roberts had 33 stolen bases. Jackson follows him on the Pac-12 season leaderboard with 17 stolen bases.
- Entering the home stretch of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's highest-scoring offenses at 7.4 runs per game. It's the third-most in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance, the Utes' production is up from 6.7 runs per game last season and 6.2 runs per game in 2022.
- The pitching staff also has shown continued progress from a year ago. Now with a 4.97 ERA on the season, Gary Henderson has developed the staff into a top-four group in the Pac-12 and top-55 in the country. It's an improvement from a 7.12 tally at the end of the 2023 season.
- Friday night starter and left-hander Bryson Van Sickle is in the rhythm of giving the Utes a spark going into a weekend series. Now with six series-opening starts on the books (of his 12 total GS), Van Sickle has a 3-1 record and a 3.03 earned run average—the fourth-best ERA in the Pac-12. The Utes are 6-2 in games when Van Sickle goes six innings or more.
- Arizona swept last year's series between these teams in Tucson, but the Utes took two of three in 2022—the last time the sides met in SLC. That year, Utah nearly had the sweep over then No. 20-Arizona. The Utes won the final two games and dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker in the series opener.
- The Utes will play one final regular season home game next Tuesday, May 14, with a matchup against Utah Tech. Then the club will head on the road for a three-game series at USC (May 16-18); it'll be played at Great Park in Irvine, California, while Dedeaux Field on USC's campus is under construction.
