PROVO, Utah – The Utah baseball team fell to BYU in a 6-4 contest on Thursday night at Miller Park.
Â
Daniel Arambula went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run, scoring twice on the night.
Cal Miller doubled and scored early in the game while
Jake Long contributed a run as well.
Jet Gilliam had a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Â
The long ball for Arambula was his fourth home run of the season. Defensively, Utah turned three double plays on the night to tie a season-high.
Â
Utah (21-19, 9-13 Big 12) evaded an early BYU threat after the Cougars put runners at the corners with one out in the first inning. Starting pitcher
Colter McAnelly induced a ground ball that
Matt Flaharty tracked down on a tough play, starting a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning with the game scoreless.
Â
The Utes broke the ice in the top of the second, kicked off by a double from Miller that hopped off the left field wall. He moved up to third base on a single from Gilliam and scored when Flaharty gave one a ride to the warning track for a sacrifice fly. In the third inning the Utes had a chance to do more damage with the bases loaded, but a double play ended the frame.
Â
BYU evened the score at one in its half of the third inning, beginning the stanza with a walk and two singles. But McAnelly responded with a 1-2-3 fourth, capped off by a strikeout of Ridge Erickson in which McAnelly battled back from a 3-1 count.
Â
Two hits and a Cougar error helped Utah pull in front during the fifth inning. Long hit the first pitch to the right side for an infield single and took third on a double off the bat of Arambula. Then,
Cameron Gurney sent a ground ball through the mound as the Cougars came home with an errant throw, allowing both Long and Arambula to score on the play and put the Utes ahead 3-1.
Â
Momentum swung in the home half of the fifth with a Cougar five-spot—a stretch that included four hits with two outs plus a walk. It gave BYU its first lead of the night at 6-3.
Â
Utah got one back in the seventh inning on a solo home run from Arambula over the left field fence. The Utes brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth inning, but two pop ups ended the threat and the squad went down in order in the ninth to end the ballgame.
