Eric Weddle Named 2026 Utah Football Ring of Honor Inductee

Former Ute All-American to be honored at Sept. 12 home game vs. Arkansas
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Football alumnus and Super Bowl LVI champion Eric Weddle has been named the 2026 inductee to the program's Ring of Honor and will be honored at the Utes' home game vs. Arkansas on Sept. 12.
One of the most versatile players in program history, Weddle starred at Utah from 2003-06 before going on to play 14 seasons in the NFL.
Established in 2024, the Ring of Honor includes players and coaches alike who have achieved the highest honors in college football, the pros and in the community. Inductees are enshrined with their names prominently displayed on the press box of Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Weddle, a native of Fontana, California, is also a member of the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class.
Well-known for his prowess at safety and cornerback, Weddle also shined as a return man and on offense. He capped off his collegiate career as a consensus first-team All-American in 2006 and holding an instrumental part in Utah's mid-2000s rise to national success. He helped the program to a 37-12 record over his four seasons, highlighted by an undefeated campaign in 2004 and bowl victories in each of his four years. Weddle played the 2003 and '04 seasons under head coach Urban Meyer before his defensive coordinator, Kyle Whittingham, took the helm beginning in 2005.
Weddle was a cornerstone of Utah's historic 2004 season, which saw a perfect 12-0 record and a No. 4 final ranking in the AP Poll. It culminated in the program's first-ever BCS bowl appearance (the Fiesta Bowl) with the Utes becoming the first team from a non-automatically qualifying BCS conference to earn a BCS bowl bid.
The back-to-back Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year (2005, '06) was a four-time all-conference pick, earning First Team honors in 2005 and 2006, Second Team accolades in 2004 and Honorable Mention in 2003. He was part of conference championship teams in 2003 and '04 and finished his career among the MWC's all-time leaders in forced fumbles (9) and pick-sixes (3).
Weddle holds the Utah record for career forced fumbles (9) and ranks second all-time in interceptions (18). He contributed not only as a defensive playmaker but also as a runner, passer, and return specialist, scoring eight touchdowns in 2006. He also holds the distinction as the first player in Utah history to score on back-to-back plays from scrimmage. Weddle finished his Utah career with 277 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 18 interceptions, 23 pass breakups, nine forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries (including two returned for a touchdown). He rushed 52 times for 259 yards and six touchdowns, returned 52 punts for 408 yards and even had two completions for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers, Weddle played 14 seasons in the league with the Chargers, Baltimore Ravens and the Los Angeles Rams. He was twice named a First Team All-Pro and three times as a Second Team All-Pro. He was a six-time Pro Bowl pick and won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams.
Weddle is currently the head football coach at Rancho Bernardo High School in Poway, California, and he launched a jewelry line to benefit organizations that provide resources to domestic violence victims. He was inducted into the Utah Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. In 2020, campus presented Weddle with its Distinguished Alumni Award.
