Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On his 100th win…
I was never really aware of any of that stuff. It was cool, one of my favorite songs that they played on the board, but we’ve talked about it always being about we and not me, and it probably should happen when you’re going on your sixth year, so it was a pretty good effort on our part. I thought we had a number of guys contributing. We got off to a good old-fashioned NBA day about five minutes into the game, we were on pace to score about 150 points. There wasn’t a lot of defense from either team and Montana State’s an explosive offensive team as you saw. They got some guys that can really drive and play. We took advantage of being bigger, in the post, and I thought they took advantage of us off the dribble and our inability to really square the basketball. But you know, it was good, it was a good win, and still not at all pleased with our turnovers, having nine in the first half and eight in the second, we really, we have to fix that, that’s a point of emphasis for me.
On beating Montana State…
You know, I’ll always be a Grizzly, obviously, my alma mater, and I’ve got a lot of respect for the people from Montana, I ran into some old friends today at the hotel, you know, some Bobcats, you know, it made it a little more interesting.
On Kyle Kuzma almost recording a triple-double…
I didn’t have any idea, but it explained his last turnover, and I found that out after the game, that he had been informed that he had nine assists, and wasn’t overly pleased about trying to throw it down in double coverage for a touchdown when we didn’t need it, we had guys wide open, but that’s part of maturing a little bit. It would’ve been neat if he got it, but I told him in my mind, it’s a little bit of a milestone for numbers, but it’s a heck of a game. Forget if you have nine assists or eleven assists, I’m pleased with his performance. Overall, we just need some more maturity and some discipline, I think on our squad. We’ve got a young team, and we don’t have a few years to kind of just let this transpire and I’m asking our guys to be a little bit more disciplined, and find an edge, and I think that those types of turnovers and the number of turnovers that we had is kind of indicative that we’ve got to figure some stuff out.
On Kuzma’s role on the team…
As far as the point forward, what we’ve done, and it’s done a nice job, is we kind of dangle the fruit in front of everybody except our five men. Jayce, Big Dave starts playing, you know, we don’t want them pushing it on the break, but one through four, you get the rebound, we’re allowing rather than an outlet phase to a guard and going. We’re allowing those guys to make some plays.

On wanting to reach a triple-double…
Pretty obviously I threw a 94-foot pass that was a turnover so I tried that and it didn’t happen. So it is all good. I am just learning.
On sharing the ball…
I just feel like we hit a lot more shots tonight than we did against Butler. Montana State did a good job double-teaming me so I was able to find people and people converted.
On Kystkowiak’s 100th win…
It means a lot. I love it here at Utah and Utah has grown on me and it is just great for Coach K to restore the program and bring it back to what it used to be. I am just happy I was here for a lot of it. Hopefully we can get more wins.
Utah junior Tyler Rawson
On Kuzma sharing the ball to him specifically...
Like he said, they were coming and double-teaming him and it was usually my man so I was just trying to come and find my way to the basket. He is a great passer and always finds a way to the open guys.
On bounce back game individually…
I think against Butler individually we struggled. Today we hit some shots and converted the open plays. We made the simple plays we weren’t against Butler and I think that is important for this team moving forward.
On turnovers…
I think we just have to mantain that a focus. We are getting lackadaisical with the lead and we weren’t taking care of the ball seriously. I think we need to do a better job of focusing on the ball and being disciplined in our offense.
Montana State Head Coach Brian Fish
On the game…
We had some guys that really helped us out and really got after it but having said that, at the end of the day we just gave up too many missed layups and let them get too many second chance points. They beat us 52-20 in the paint and I thought they would beat us but I didn’t think they would get us by 32.
The adjustment defensively in second half…
I think any time you make shots early you get into a trading baskets type thing and we were making shots early and trading baskets instead of hungering down and playing defense. That’s the sign of an inexperienced team and that is something we have got to take away. If you make shots you should be in the lead and you can’t be playing them even when you are making shots. They were making shots, we were making shots and we were accepting that. They made a couple threes early but at the end of the day, they were 4-for-10 in the first half shooting threes and we were going to live with that. At the end of the day we won the shooting threes, they were 5-for-19 so we got what we wanted there but we just didn’t get many stops in the paint and that is something we are going to get on the film and watch and get better.
Lessons from the game…
I am really upset about being out-boarded by 20. That’s inexcusable and we had inside position and we had two guys leak out on there on the last play instead of going to rebound. It’s something they are going to see in film and we are going to grind it out of them. We have practice on Sunday and we cant get back tonight because of the snow so we are going to grind it out on Saturday and Sunday. We are playing a big physical team on Monday in Milwaukee at home and hopefully we get a big crowd and we are ready to go because this team deserves to come out and be watched because they play the right way. We just need to get a little tougher and finish some layups. We will see how this pans out in the days and see how we grow with a lot of practice time.
