On what to win a game like this when the finish wasn’t exactly graceful ...
“I don’t know your definition of graceful, but it was to us. A win on the road is a win on the road. We made free throws when we had to, to keep the lead to four. We got the ball inbounds when we had to, which has been a problem at times. We got some stops when we had to, so it was a heck of an ending for us to be quite honest. Pretty proud of our guys, getting down early, then Kyle (Kuzma) had a really nice stretch in that second half to get us a lead and everyone was clicking and playing well. They are a hard team to play against, they are going to beat a lot of teams here. This is a heck of a win for the Utes.”
On if anything was said to Kyle Kuzma at halftime that lead to a strong second half ...
“Not so much anything that was said. When you see the ball go in the basket that obviously lights a fire under you. Kyle plays hard regardless, but the ball went in from the three point line. We know he is capable of it, he just hasn’t found it. He found it today and that helped him. He made some nice passes and plays. He was out there guarding a 6’3” two guard and did a good job. He had a terrific game, double-digit rebounds and he put the ball in the basket. He did what we were hoping he can do; make open shots, rebound, and defend. We’re really proud of Kyle’s effort today.”
On David Collette’s energy to finish the game ...
“I mean that is his job, he plays with great energy and effort. We got some nice baskets breaking the press and going to Dave (Collette). He is very capable attacking the rim. He plays with that usually all the time. He has experience behind him, he has been in close games so he knew the deal. You could easily say we will take him out and put guards in at the end of the game to guard, but it was too hard at the end. We had no one that was playing for us and Dave understands end of game situations. He did a nice job for us.”
On JoJo Zamora and Lorenzo Bonam’s success at the foul line down the stretch …
“Well those are our best shooters and we tried to get them the ball at the end of the game and it worked. They were able to knock them down. Lorenzo missed one there and I think it was a three-point game, when he missed that one. Then we bounced back and made ours to keep the game out of hand.”
On the team’s three-point shooting as addressed in a prior practice and how it translated to today’s game …
“To be honest soft rims. We knew that going in. These are nice soft rims and this is a shooter’s gym. We came early and shot a lot. We have good shooters, it is seeing the ball go in to the basket for a guy or two. We had some guys see it go in. You know Devon Daniels doesn’t shoot threes for us and he made a couple. You need all the bullets you can get and we had them all today.
On how the win on the road plays into the team’s confidence moving forward …
“It is huge. It is hard to win on the road especially in this league. This is a tough place to play and they have a good team. That was a big win for our team today. To get a split on the road in this league is an accomplishment, so we feel good about it.
