Utah achieved its highest ranking through the final Winter standings in the Learfield Director’s Cup since 1997-98, ranking 24th in Division I, second among all Pac-12 schools behind Stanford. The final 2021-22 standings also saw Utah garner its highest finish since '97-'98, placing 44th.
Eight of Utah’s sport programs earned NCAA postseason berths or played in a bowl game, the most since joining the Pac-12 in 2011-12, representing nearly half of Utah’s sport programs.
Seven programs earned NCAA Championships invitations as a team, and Football played in a New Year’s Six Bowl, with its first Rose Bowl berth.
Three other sport programs saw individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships
For the first time since joining the Pac-12, four sports earned conference championships, including two Pac-12 titles (Football and Gymnastics), one RMISA crown (Skiing) and one ASUN regular season title (Lacrosse).

ACADEMIC HIGHLIGHTS
Utah recorded its fourth consecutive year at 93-percent or higher in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate report for 2021, with its 93-percent score ranking second among Pac-12 departments behind Stanford. This record stretch includes a school-record 95-percent figure in 2018, followed by 94-percent rates in 2019 and ’20.
Utah’s student-athletes recorded a combined average GPA of 3.315 for the 2021-22 school year, just shy of the record 3.407 set in 2020-21. The 3.30 semester GPA for Spring 2022 is the seventh-highest on record for Utah, and follows a stretch of four consecutive semesters in which Utah's student-athletes recorded the four highest semester GPAs in department history—a stretch that included a school-record 3.573 in Spring 2020, and the fourth-highest, 3.329, in Fall 2021.
Utah Athletics has now achieved 32 consecutive semesters with departmental GPAs of 3.00 or higher. In the Spring 2022 semester, every Utah sport program earned a team GPA over 3.00 for the fifth consecutive semester and the fifth time overall.

Baseball
In Gary Henderson’s first season at the helm of the Utes, Utah began the year with a 9-2-1 record, the best start for the program since at least 1981.
First baseman Alex Baeza earned Utah’s first-ever ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award, presented to the nation’s top defensive player at each position. He recorded a .998 fielding percentage, being assessed just one error in 505 chances.
Baeza was among three Utes to earn postseason accolades from the Pac-12 Conference, with Baeza earned All-Defensive Team, plus catcher Davis Cop and second baseman Landon Frei taking All-Conference Honorable Mention nods.
Landon Frei, the freshman from Santa Clara, Utah, had a .330 batting average with 69 hits. Both were team-bests, with Frei’s regular season hit total ranking second among Pac-12 rookies.
Right-hander and Friday night ace Matthew Sox pitched a complete game in an April 22 win at USC - the first complete game by a Ute since 2017.

For the first time since the 2010-11 season, the Utes advanced to the NCAA Tournament, as a 7 seed, and won their opening-round game against Arkansas to advance to the round of 32.
This was the 18th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the first under head coach Lynne Roberts
Won 21 games on the season, the second time since Lynne Roberts took over that Utah won 20 or more games.
Utah was the highest-scoring team in the Pac-12 (17th NCAA), averaging 75.9 points per game–the fourth-highest figure in school history and the highest since 1980-81. Utah also led the Pac-12 in three-pointers made (7th NCAA; school-record 312), three-point attempts (7th NCAA; 876), assists per game (39th NCAA; 15.3), free throws made (18th NCAA; 469), and free throw attempts (43rd NCAA; 602).
Gianna Kneepkens was the second player since the Utes joined the Pac-12 to earn conference Freshman of the Year honors.
She is the first to claim the award since 2019 and only the second player in Utah history to win this award in Pac-12 history
She earned five Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors.
Utah had its best showing in the Pac-12 Tournament, making a run all the way to the championship game for the first time in school history. Utah advanced to the finals following an 80-73 victory over Oregon, its third win in as many days. It marked the first time in program history that Utah has won multiple games at the Pac-12 Tournament.
Utah hit nine or more three-pointers in 19 of its 33 games one the season, including hitting a school-record 19 threes against Lipscomb to open the season.
For the season, the Utes hit a school-record 312 threes, the seventh most in the NCAA.
Gianna Kneepkens earned Freshman of the Year, All-Pac-12 First Team, and All-Freshman Team, while Kennady McQueen earned Pac-12 honorable mention honors and Jenna Johnson earned All-Freshman honors.
Kneepkens is also the first player to take home All-Pac-12 First Team honors since 2019, when Megan Huff earned the recognition. Kneepkens also earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors.

Football
Utah finished the year 10-4 overall after winning the Pac-12 Championship and appearing in its first-ever Rose Bowl.
The Utes went 8-1 in Pac-12 play to tie its best conference record since joining the league in 2011.
Utah finished the 2021 season ranked 11th in the CFP and 12th in both the AP and Coaches Polls, the fourth time in program history the Utes have landed inside the top-15 in the final AP Poll and the 10th time in the final poll overall.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham became Utah’s all-time wins leader with the Utes’ historic win over No. 3 Oregon on Nov. 20, 2021 in Rice-Eccles Stadium with the win once again clinching the Pac-12 South Title for the fourth time.
In Pac-12 games, Utah led the league in scoring offense (37.2), touchdowns scored (45), total offense (454.89), rushing offense (240.78) and passing efficiency (145.7) with All-Pac-12 first-team quarterback Cameron Rising leading the unit.
Utah’s offense also ranked seventh in the FBS in first downs offense (340), 13th in rushing offense (216.8) and 14th in scoring offense (36.1), thanks to All-Pac-12 first-team running back Tavion Thomas setting the program record with 21 rushing scores.
The Utes led the Pac-12 in sacks (3.00) and tackles for loss (6.9), also ranking 19th and 21st in the FBS. Utah also ranked third in the league in scoring defense (22.6) and total defense (341.6) with first round NFL Draft pick Devin Lloyd leading the conference and ranking No. 3 in the FBS in tackles for loss per game (1.6).
Golf
Made first NCAA Championship appearance since 1988 (34 years).
Captured 5th-place at the NCAA Norman Regional, the highest finish on record.
Finished tied for 8th at the Pac-12 Conference Championship, the second-best finish for the Utes since joining the league.

Blake Tomlinson and Braxton Watts garnered Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Freshman Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors, respectively.
Tomlinson finished the season tied with Kyler Dunkle and Dustin Pimm for the lowest season scoring average at 71.2.
Tomlinson recorded the first hole-in-one by a Ute during the third round of the Pac-12 Championship since 2019.
Tomlinson carded the third-lowest conference championship 72-hole (284) in program history and became just the third Ute to finish in the top-10.
Javier Barcos posted the top-two lowest 54-hole scores in record in program history at the Notre Dame Collegiate (199, 67-67-65) and the Visit Stockton Invitational (200, 66-63-71).
Gymnastics
Utah finished the year 26-6 overall with a third place finish in the NCAA Championships, an NCAA Regional title, Pac-12 Championship, and a share of the Pac-12 Regular Season Championship.
Advanced to a school- and NCAA-record 46th-straight national championship appearance and remained the only program in the nation to compete at every national championship.
In 2022, Utah had one individual national champion, a regional bars champion, four Pac-12 Individual Champions, five WCGA Regular Season All-Americans, seven NCAA All-Americans, and a program-record 10 All-Pac-12 gymnasts.
The Red Rocks scored a 198+ a program-record four times in 2022, highlighted by their 198.575 against Minnesota, which is the second-best score in program history and fourth best in NCAA history. The Utes posted a school-record 49.800 on bars to highlight the meet.
Jaedyn Rucker became the fifth NCAA Vault Champion in school history.
Maile O’Keefe became the all-time leader in Perfect 10.0s on beam in a single season (3). She was also named the 2022 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year after claiming the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year last year.
Utah recorded a program-record five Perfect 10s on beam in 2022, while recording four perfect scores on bars.
Lacrosse
Utah Lacrosse won the ASUN regular season title in its first year in the league, finishing the season 10-4 overall and 5-0 in ASUN play.
Utah’s 10 wins set a program record with its seven-game winning streak serving as the longest in program history.
Utah broke 42 school records in 2022.
In their first year in the ASUN, Utah swept the major awards, winning coach of the year (Drew McMinn), offensive player of the year (Tyler Bradbury) and defensive player of the year (Samuel Cambere).
Utah finished the season leading the league in assists per game (8.79), clearing percentage (.911), face-off win percentage (.536), ground balls per game (31.93), points per game (22.43), scoring margin (2.29), scoring offense (13.64) and turnovers per game (15.43).
The Utes ranked sixth nationally in assists per game (8.79), also leading the country in clearing percentage (.911).
Skiing
Utah led the NCAA Championship meet wire-to-wire, culminating with its 15th team national title all-time (14th NCAA), third straight and fourth in the last five completed national championships.
The Utes captured both women’s Nordic individual championships by way of Sophia Laukli (15K freestyle) and Novie McCabe (5K classic). It was the second straight year Utah swept the women’s Nordic championship races.
McCabe, the National Women’s Nordic Skier of the Year, was among 14 Utes to earn All-America accolades - the most of any team.
During the regular season, Utah won all but one meet en route to the overall RMISA Regular Season Championship, as well as the alpine-only and Nordic-only top spots.
Between current (seven) and former (five) student-athletes, a program-record 12 skiers with ties to the Utah ski team qualified for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The total was the most in NCAA Division I. Additionally, former Ute skier Nick Hendrickson served as head coach of the United States’ Nordic combined team.
The 12 Utah ski team qualifiers represented six different nations and were part of 38 athletes with some connection to the University of Utah - more than any university worldwide.
Soccer
Utah named Hideki Nakada as the head coach on May 27. He became the third head coach in program history.
In Coach Nakada’s first game at the helm, the Utes defeated the Portland Pilots, 3-1, for his first win as a head coach
Played in-state rival No. 22 BYU to a 0-0 draw in front of 2,544 fans at Ute Field.
Earned its second ranked tie of the year when they played No. 3 UCLA to a 1-1 draw.
Won or tied against four Pac-12 opponents, defeating Oregon State and tying No. 3 UCLA, Washington and Colorado.
Softball
Finished the season with a 27-27 overall record and a 9-15 mark in conference play. The best overall record and the most wins in Pac-12 play since 2017.
Finished seventh in the Pac-12, best finish since 2019.
Head Coach Amy Hogue became the program’s winningest head coach, passing Norma Carr (372). The record-setting win came via an 11-1 run rule victory over Cal Baptist at the Kajikawa Classic. Coach A finished the season with 398 wins at Utah and 595 for her career.
Ellessa Bonstrom became the 13th All-American in program history, selected to the NFCA third-team as an outfielder. She was the first Utah All-American since 2017 when Hannah Flippen picked up her third honor.
Ellessa Bonstrom was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 team for the first time in her career.
Ellessa Bonstrom and Julia Jimenez were named to the NFCA All-Pacific Region first team as Halle Morris earned third team honors. The first time since 2019 three Utes have been named NFCA All-Region.

Set four new school records in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 200 & 400 medley relays. Three were set at the NCAA Championship meet.
Cooper deRyk, Jaek Horner, Finn O’Haimhirgin and Andrei Ungur earned All-American status (16th place) in the 200 Medley Relay after their school-record performance at the NCAA Championships.
Andrei Ungur set the school record in the 100 backstroke at the NCAA Championships.
Jaek Horner set the school record in the 100 breaststroke at the Pac-12 Championships.
The first time in program history three men qualified to dive at the NCAA Championships meet.
As a freshman diver, Ben Smyth qualified for the NCAA Championships in the platform and 3-meter dives at the Zone E Championships.
Jenner Pennock qualified to compete in the platform and 1-meter dives.
Tony Chen qualified to compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter events.
For the dive team, scored the second-highest point total at the Pac-12 Championships trailing only the 2021 performance.
Ben Smyth captured a second-place podium finish on the platform for the Utes at the conference championships.

Holly Waxman was named the Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year, just the fourth Pac-12 postseason award in program history.
Waxman was named Pac-12 Diver of the Week after her strong performance at the Air Force Diving Invitational.
Lexi Mills was named the Pac-12 Diver of the Month after her stellar performance at the Big Al Invitational, hosted by Princeton.
Waxman fell just short of earning a bid in all three events at the Zone E Diving Championships. Went on to compete at the NCAA Championships in the 1-meter and 3-meter events, becoming the first Utah freshman woman diver to compete at the NCAA Championships.

Women’s Tennis
The Utes opened the season with a 9-0 mark–the best start in program history–en route to a 15-11 overall record for the season.
Utah defeated three ranked opponents, including the program’s 13th straight victory over BYU, who was ranked No. 54.
Utah head coach Ric Mortera landed the ninth-ranked recruiting class in the nation for 2022, marking the first time in program history that Utah had a top 10 recruiting class.
Coach Mortera was named Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year, the first such honor for a Utah women’s tennis head coach. In addition, Blair Shankle earned ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, also a first in program history.
Following the Pac-12 Tournament, the conference announced that Utah's duo of Anastasia Goncharova and Linda Huang earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors.
Utah earned a 4-2 victory over then-No. 21 USC. The win was the first-ever victory over USC in program history. In the match against the Trojans, Linda Huang defeated Eryn Cayetano, who was ranked fifth in the ITA singles rankings. This was the third highest-ranked singles win in program history for the Utes.
Emily Dush and Madeline Lamoreaux earned a spot at the ITA All-American. This was the first time the Utes earned a berth in the doubles draw since 2008. Lamoreaux also qualified for the singles draw of the ITA All-American.
Volleyball
Utah finished the fall season 22-9 overall and 14-6 in Pac-12 play, placing third in the conference for the third consecutive year. The 14 wins in Pac-12 play tied a program-best. The Utes reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament after advancing to the postseason for the sixth-straight season.
Utah was ranked in the top-25 the entire season, with the highest ranking of the year coming at No. 10 in the country. Utah has now been ranked for 44 weeks in a row, dating back to Sept. 2, 2019.
Utah recorded its two highest-ranked road wins in program history - at No. 3 Nebraska and No. 6 Washington.
Dani Drews became Utah’s all-time leader in kills with 2,268 career kills. She is the only Ute in history to post 2,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career, and is just the sixth player in Pac-12 history to do so. She finished her career second all-time in Pac-12 history in career kills.
Dani Drews was named an AVCA First Team All-American for the third year in a row, becoming the only player in program history to have earned multiple first team honors in a career. She was also the AVCA Pacific South Region Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.
Madelyn Robinson joined Drews on the All-Region Team for the first time in her career, while the Ute duo were also All-Pac-12 first team selections. Stef Jankiewicz and Zoe Weatherington landed on the honorable mention team.
Beach Volleyball
Utah earned its first regular season Pac-12 Conference win against Oregon at the Pac-12 South Invitational, defeating the Ducks 3-2 in Tucson.
The Utes received votes in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll for the first time in school history when the poll was released on April 5, 2022.
Utah had its first beach-only recruited roster since the program started in 2017, welcoming eight true freshmen.
Kylie Pitzak and Sydney Jacinto earned a dual point for Utah against No. 8 Stanford after defeating the Cardinal’s No. 5 pair in three sets. The win for the Ute pair marked the first dual point against a top-10 team since 2018 and just the fourth in program history.
