Sports Psychology & Wellness

SPWO has a mission of promoting the mental health, wellness, and performance of all student-athletes. Our services are confidential and include individual and group mental health therapy, mental performance, consultation, crisis intervention, outreach and education, and referrals. Presenting concerns of student athletes range from the expected developmental and adjustment-related concerns for the general college student population to more complex mental health issues. The most common presenting concerns include: anxiety, relationship concerns, academic issues, depression, sport injury, athletic identity, disordered eating, addiction, communication concerns, and diversity/identity concerns. We aim to provide services in a timely manner, including no financial charge to student athletes.
Mental performance services are available to individual student athletes as well as sports teams. Assisting a student athlete with mental performance includes working on aspects of emotions, thoughts, behaviors, or new roles on a sports team. Student athletes hoping to improve their concentration, motivation, or discipline in relationship to sports performance can benefit greatly from mental performance coaching. Developing skills to enhance awareness and minimize distractions, both internal and external, represent key aspects of mental performance services. Staff in Sport Psychology & Wellness are available to assist sports teams in all aspects of sport, including team building, communication, goal setting, team cohesion, conflict management, and managing emotions.
Appointments can be scheduled by reaching out to a provider directly or through your Athletic Trainer, Academic Advisor or Sport Dietician.
