Jaka Korencan is in his 13th season as head alpine coach at Utah. He is in his 18th year overall with the Utes after beginning as an assistant in 2001. During his tenure, Korencan has driven the Ute alpine contingent to consistently be among the best in the country. His athletes have won 10 individual NCAA titles and 34 skiers have earned All-America honors.
Most recently, two alpine skiers won NCAA championships in 2016, Julie Mohagen in the slalom and Endre Bjertness in the giant slalom. Ben Thornhill was a two-time men's giant slalom national champion in 2003 and 2004. Also earning national titles was Jernej Bukovec (2001, slalom), Petra Svet (2001, slalom), Lina Johansson (2003, slalom), Scott Veenis (2006, giant slalom), Eva Huckova (2010, giant slalom), Mark Engel (2014, giant slalom).
Two alpine skiers have gone from Utah to the U.S. Ski Team under his tenure - Engel in 2014 and Tague Thorson in 2008.
Korencan was the RMISA's Alpine Coach of the Year in 2012. He helped lead Utah to the 2017 and 2003 NCAA titles, while the Utes have finished as the NCAA runner ups four times during his tenure.
Additionally, under Korencan's guidance, the Ute alpine team has consistently delivered stellar academic results and rank among the athletic department leaders in grade point average. Kristiina Rove was a 2015 Academic All-American and earned a Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship. Bjertness earned Academic All-America honors in 2016. Huckova was a two-time Academic All-American from 2010-11.
"Student-athletes at the University of Utah are getting extraordinary support from the athletic department and the University itself," said Korencan. "The University provides student athletes an outstanding environment to develop their athleticism as well as gain a world-class education. This team has a rich tradition of excellence, and I am extremely excited, motivated, and honored to lead this team to continued success."
A native of Slovenia, Korencan earned a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science from Utah in 2004, and in 2007 he completed a master's degree in sport psychology.
