Ben Scheu returned to the Utah Athletics family in August 2021 as the primary athletic trainer for the Utes ski and golf programs. He is responsible for daily training and competition coverage, treatment, injury prevention, and rehab for student-athletes within both programs.
Before coming back to the U., Scheu was the lead men’s alpine athletic trainer for the U.S. Ski Team. In this role, he coordinated the medical care for elite-level alpine ski races around the globe. During training projects and in-season race preparation periods, Scheu operated as the primary healthcare provider for emergency medicine and provided treatments and rehab programs for the athletes.
Scheu worked on-site for World Cup competitions, taking on the role of medical liaison for the U.S. Ski Team, providing aid and care plans for injured athletes.
Scheu’s first stint with the Utes came during 2018-20 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer, primarily working with both the alpine and Nordic ski teams. He was responsible for providing injury evaluations, rehabilitation programs, and coverage of all training and competitions for both home and away events.
Before coming to Salt Lake, Scheu was an assistant athletic trainer at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts. He served as a member of the comprehensive sports medicine team, where he took on the role of aiding in the management of illnesses and injuries of student-athletes throughout all 18 NCAA Division III athletic teams.
Outside his experience in the collegiate athletics realm, Scheu was a team and trip leader for Wilderness Adventures in Jackson, Wyoming in 2016 and ‘17. There he instructed and prepared fellow leaders in both the frontcountry and backcountry settings to prepare them to lead trips safely. While there, he guided groups of 12-13 high school students through the backcountry wilderness of Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon to develop future leaders with excellent communication skills while further developing their love for the natural world by backpacking, rock climbing, and rafting.
His first jump into coaching came in 2013-14 as BOOST Program Coach for Killington Mountain School in Scheu’s home state of Vermont. He developed young athletes with high hopes for their skiing careers while balancing their dedication to academics.
A native of Woodstock, Vermont, he earned a Bachelor's degree in athletic training in 2016 from the University of Vermont. Scheu went on to earn his Master's in sports medicine from the University of Utah in 2020.
