Cody Thomson has spent 14 seasons as a full-time assistant with the Utes and has been part of the staff since 2005.
In 2016, under Thomson's tutelage, Katie Donovan was a third-team NFCA All-Pacific Region selection and was named first-team All-Pac-12. She surpassed her career high for wins with 20, third-most of any Pac-12 pitcher, and her 178.1 innings pitched and 30 starts also ranked third in the conference. Donovan amassed a 2.47 earned run average, fifth in the Pac-12, and her 141 strikeouts were seventh-most.
Donovan defeated No. 9 Kentucky twice in the NCAA Tournament, allowing just one earned run of 13 1/3 innings pitched and also earned a save in the first game against Illinois.
Miranda Viramontes recorded the seventh-best ERA in the Pac-12 (2.73). She made 24 starts and seven relief appearances for the Utes with some exceptional performances in the NCAA Tournament. Viramontes earned the victory with 6 2/3 scoreless innings against Illinois, striking out six batters, then had a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game loss to No. 9 Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament. She picked up her second save of the season when she closed the door on the ninth-ranked Wildcats in their first NCAA Regional matchup.
In 2015, Donovan was named first-team All-Pac-12 and selected second-team NFCA All-Region. A fellow first-team Pac-12 All-Freshman selection, she crafted a 2.66 ERA with 154 strikeouts, as both numbers ranked third in the Pac-12. Her seven saves led the Pac-12 and ranked third in the nation, while her 45 appearances were second most in the Pac-12.
Viramontes earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 and first-team Pac-12 All-Freshman. Along with Donovan, she was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week and recorded a 3.20 ERA, fifth in the Pac-12, making 24 starts for the Utes.
Thomson was a pitcher on the USA Softball Men’s National Team from 2004-09. He was named Best Pitcher at the NAFA World Series in 2006 and was a four-time ASA All-American.
Thomson is married to the former Amanda Tuft and has four children: Mikaela, Chase, Cayden and Quinley.
