SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Invitational is supposed to be a regular season tune-up for in-state schools Utah, Weber State and Utah State, but the Ute women's tennis team did more than idle out of the gate at the Eccles Tennis Center on Thursday night.
Five Utes earned their way into the quarterfinals with solid performances in the opening round of the tournament. Freshman Hillaree Hawkins, who graduated from Ogden High School in December, made her Ute debut in fine fashion, upsetting third seeded Veronica Reynosa of WSU, 6-3, 6-0, to advance in the winner's bracket. Senior Molly Sanderson also upset the number seven seed, Sarah Lowe of USU, 6-1, 6-4, to move on. Number one seed, Megan Payne cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Heather Grass of USU, to hold her seed. Freshmen number two seed Linn Ronnberg and number four seed Irini Kotoglou joined their Ute teammates with 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0, wins over WSU teammates Summer Marshall and Aimee Evans, respectively.
The Ute five are joined in the quarterfinals by Weber's Kim Schlagel, who defeated USU's Mindy Nelson, 6-3, 6-1, WSU's Dana Delancey, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Jackie Ellis of USU, and WSU's Nicole Woywood, who won 6-3, 6-2 over Tracy Bertagna of USU, and also won by default over injured Ute Heidi Thomas. The tournament continues Friday starting at 2:00 p.m. and running all day, and concludes with singles and doubles finals on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m.
