SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Utah dropped both of its games on Sunday but still placed third at the National Invitational Softball Tournament. Utah fell to No. 16 California, 2-0, and No. 23 Iowa, 6-3, in the semifinal games.
California, which won the tournament championship without a loss, scored a run in both the fourth and sixth innings to beat the Utes. Utah starter Sarah Farnworth gave up one earned run off of four hits and struck out three in seven innings. Farnworth, who was later named to the all-tournament team, went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Iowa avenged a 5-4 loss to Utah on Saturday by edging the Utes out for a place in the championship game. Utah outhit the Hawkeyes 9-6 but committed three errors. Iowa scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the third. Only one run was earned. Starter Kristin Arbogast took the loss, lasting only 1/3 of an inning. Arbogast gave up four runs (one earned) off of three hits and one walk, falling to 4-6. Michele Larsen went 3-for-3 and Carrie Kosderka went 2-for-3, each scoring a run. Lisa Hashimoto drove in two of the Utes' three runs in the top of the seventh with a double.
Utah plays a doubleheader against Rutgers on Tuesday in Berkeley, Calif.
