OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The University of Utah softball team was eliminated from the Big 12 Tournament on Thursday evening after suffering a 7-0 defeat to the No. 15/16 Oklahoma State Cowgirls at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Utah finishes the 2026 campaign with a 35-20 record. The team's 22-win improvement from last season is the second-largest improvement in program history, topped only by the 1993-94 seasons that saw the Utes go from 23 victories to 51. The squad's .496 slugging percentage and .497 on-base percentage for the year are both new program bests.
"At one point, it could have gone either way," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Once they cracked through and got that first one it was tough because every ground ball they hit seemed to find a spot. I'm really proud of what it is [our team] did to prepare to have an opportunity to put oursevles in that position. We squared some balls up and they went right at people and theirs found a way through and that's how the game goes."
Both pitchers started the day strong, with Oklahoma State's Ruby Meylan holding Utah hitless through four innings, while Utes' pitcher
Hailey Maestretti stranded runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames. Maestretti then kept pace by also hanging up zeroes in the third and fourth.
In the fifth, a pair of singles put two on with one out for the Cowgirls and Rosie Davis poked a RBI single through the middle to break the scoreless tie. Two batters later, a three-run triple off the bat of Amanda Hasler made the score 4-0 and Madison Hoffman added another tally with a run-scoring hit through the middle. OSU then tacked on two in the sixth.
Unfortunately for the Utes, that deficit was too much to overcome.
Shonty Passi worked a sixth-inning walk and
Kennedy Proctor singled to start the seventh, but Utah couldn't find the momentum it needed to spark a comeback attempt.
