CEDAR CITY, Utah - Sarah Farnworth hit a three-run shot in the top of the third and got the victory on the mound as Utah defeated Southern Utah 5-4 on Wednesday in a game called after five innings because of snow flurries. Game two of the doubleheader was canceled.
Farnworth broke a scoreless tie with her fourth home run of the season to left field that brought in Stacy O'Farrell and Sunny Smith with two outs. After Southern Utah got a run in the bottom of the third and Utah answered with another run in the top of the fourth, the Thunderbirds rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth off of three hits and two Ute errors.
Farnworth improved to 10-7 with the win. She gave up three earned runs off of eight hits, struck out six and walked two in five innings. Jennie Kerr took the loss for SUU to fall to 2-17.
Both teams got eight hits and committed two errors. Lyndsey Trevis went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Utes.
Utah evened its record at 16-16 with the win and Southern Utah fell to 5-30 with the loss. Utah is scheduled to host the opener of a three-game series with Colorado State on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Ute Field.
