The University of Utah women's tennis team (6-10) will head to the
Western Athletic Conference Championships in Albuquerque, NM, April
28-May 1. Opponent and match time is yet to be determined.
About the WAC:
There are eight WAC teams ranked in the top 75, Fresno State (21),
New Mexico (28), Rice (36), San Diego State (41), Texas Christian
(51), Texas-El Paso (64), Tulsa (66), and Nevada-Las Vegas (75).
About the Utes:
A young injury plagued Utah team has not found much comfort in an
overbearing schedule, as the Utes have a 6-10 mark going into the WAC
tournament. No. 76 Megan Payne has had arguably the best season ever
by a Ute, and remains the backbone of a Utah squad with four
freshmen, with an 18-6 record.
Previously:
Albuquerque, NM-The University of Utah women's tennis team helped New
Mexico extend its home-court winning streak to 29 in a 9-0 loss to
the Lobos. The Utes forced three three-set matches in singles, as
No. 76 Megan Payne fell, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, to No. 53 Ana Friganovic.
Playing in the No. 6 spot, freshman Jane McBroom made her collegiate
debut, dropping a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 match to Nicoleta Spilca. In No. 5
action Brooke Wilkinson faltered to Neza Kurnik, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. New
Mexico cruised in doubles play, handing the Utes three decisive
losses.
