SALT LAKE CITY - Sunny Smith hit a two-run home run and Sarah Farnworth gave up just two earned runs in seven innings, but it wasn't enough as Utah fell to second-ranked Fresno State, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field. The Bulldogs swept the three-game series from the Utes.
Fresno State (57-8, 24-0 WAC) got a run in the first inning before Smith left the yard for the seventh time this season with a shot to left field in the third inning. Smith's long ball also brought in Amberly Johnson.
The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Utah (23-23, 7-9 WAC) pushed across a run in the sixth with Stacey Farnworth singling down the right field line to drive in Jenny Monson.
Sarah Farnworth, who gave up four runs off of eight hits, fell to 14-10 in the complete-game effort. Kristen Hunter gave up three hits and two unearned runs in three innings to improve to 23-5 with the win. Amanda Scott picked up her fourth save, striking out four in the final two innings.
Utah closes out the regular season at UNLV on Friday and Saturday with a berth in the WAC Tournament on the line. The top six teams in the league will qualify for the tournament, May 13-15 in Fresno, Calif.
