This Week:
The University of Utah women's tennis team (1-2) will try to pick up
its second consecutive win this Sunday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m. at
the Eccles Tennis Center, against the Kansas State Wildcats (0-5).
About the Wildcats:
Kansas State has ran into some stiff competition early on this
season, losing its first five duals to teams such as: Arizona, Notre
Dame, Tulsa, San Diego and Mississippi. The Wildcat's players have a
combined 2-26 singles record and a 0-10 doubles mark.
About the Utes:
Although young, with four freshmen and only one senior, the Utes have
gained some early experience and show signs of continuing progress.
At 1-2, their record is no indication of how far along the team is,
losing to the likes of No. 32 Northwestern and #1 Florida. Megan
Payne, the lone junior on the squad has had two impressive wins over
the 1997 NCAA runner-up and this year's current No. 35 ranked player.
Previously:
Utah picked up its first win of the season last weekend against Idaho
State, 8-1. The lone loss for the Utes came at No.1 singles, where
Linn Ronnberg fell to a formidable opponent in Irene Kakulia, 6-4,
7-5. Payne continued to play solid picking up her seventh consecutive
singles victory and teamed with Molly Sanderson at No. 1 doubles for
another win. Hillaree Hawkins, Irini Kotoglou, Sanderson, Heidi
Thomas and Brooke Wilkinson all earned straight sets victories over
the Bengals. Kotoglou-Thomas and Ronnberg-Wilkinson also cruised to
wins at No. 2 and No.3 doubles respectively.
