This Week: Utah (4-5) will try once again to find friendly confines in the Eccles Tennis Center after two weeks on the road. The Utes open Western Athletic Conference play March 20 and 21 hosting No. 53 Rice and Colorado State at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.
About the Owls: Rice is currently 9-4 with wins over No. 51 TCU and North Carolina. Owl losses have come to No. 14 Arkansas and No. 25 San Diego State. Elle Lewis has been the No. 1 singles player for all but one match, and has at some time in her career held a No. 5 ranking.
About the Rams: The most up-to-date record of the Rams was at 0-4, however, the Rams have played several more matches, including the likes of Cal-State Fullerton.
About the Utes: Megan Payne remains solid at No. 1 singles, with only one loss during the spring. Molly Sanderson and Heidi Thomas are playing some of their best tennis ever, and Sanderson has stayed toward the top of the lineup after playing as high as No. 2 for the first time in her career. Linn Ronnberg is gaining confidence each match and has provided some good wins for the Utes. Hillaree Hawkins and Irini Kotoglou are suffering from minor injuries that have limited their performance, however, the tandem continues to compete well. Brooke Wilkinson cracked the lineup last weekend on the road and won both doubles matches with Thomas.
Previously: Mobile, Ala.-Utah's No. 1 singles player, Megan Payne, after having her 10-match win streak snapped two days ago, gets back on the winning track by throttling South Alabama's Martina Ondrejkova, 6-4, 6-1. The Jaguars, however, didn't surrender another match to the Utes, winning out in straight sets.
Columbia, SC-Utah's women's tennis team gets shutout by No. 21 South Carolina. Utah breaks even on the year at 4-4 after the loss. No.1 singles player, Megan Payne, relinquished her first match of the season to Celine Regnier, breaking Payne's 10-match winning streak, 7-6(1), 6-3. Hillaree Hawkins and Linn Ronnberg gave the Utes their best chance for a win at No. 3 doubles losing 8-4 in the lopsided match. Utah plays its second consecutive top-25 team Sunday in Mobile, Ala. against 19th-ranked South Alabama.
Looking Ahead: Utah will face in-state rival No. 36 Brigham Young in Provo April 2 at 3:00 p.m.
