SALT LAKE CITY - Mona Stevens, head softball coach at the University of Utah, was recently named the head coach of the USA Softball Junior National Team that will compete in the 1999 World Games in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-27.
The U.S. Junior National Team of 17 players, ranging from high school juniors to college freshmen, was selected from a pool of 40 players last weekend in San Diego. Stevens and the team will assemble in early June and then compete in the U.S. Sports Festival, June 8-13 in Fresno, Calif., before departing for Taiwan.
"I'm very excited about this great opportunity," said Stevens. "Representing your country is always a rewarding experience. With our players' commitments to school, we won't have a lot of time to practice and really build a team before we're going to have to play. But, most of the kids on the team have never been out of the country, and they're all very excited."
Stevens has previous experience with USA Softball, coaching the U.S. National Team to the gold medal at the 1997 Pan American Games qualifying tournament in Colombia, South America. She was later honored as the 1997 United States Olympic Committee National Softball Coach of the Year.
Preparing for her third season at Utah, Stevens has posted an 80-39 (.613) record in two years and led the Utes to the NCAA Regionals in 1997.
