UTAH UPDATE: The Utes are 5-6 after competing in two tournaments to open the season. Utah went 2-3, facing four Top 25 teams, at Arizona State's Fiesta Bowl Tournament, Feb. 12-14 in Tempe, Ariz. Last weekend, Utah tied for third place, posting a 3-3 record at the New Mexico State's Troy Cox Softball Classic.
Sophomore catcher/third baseman Stacey Farnworth had a great showing at the Troy Cox Softball Classic, earning all-tournament honors. She leads the team in hitting with a .412 batting average, two home runs and three RBI. Sunny Smith is hitting .370 with two home runs and five RBI. Sophomore Sara Farnworth leads the pitching staff with a 1.02 ERA and a 4-2 record.
COMING UP: Utah makes its annual Spring Break road trip. Utah opens the road swing at the National Invitational Softball Tournament in San Jose, Calif., March 12-14. The Utes then play a doubleheader against Rutgers in Berkeley, Calif., on March 16 at 12:00 p.m. PST. Utah then competes in the KIA Klassic, March 18-21 in Fullerton, Calif.
A LOOK AT SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs are 4-11 on the season after going 1-3 last weekend at the Cal State Northridge Tournament. In that tournament, SDSU Split with Cal State Northridge, losing 7-1 on Saturday and winning 4-0 on Sunday; and lost twice to Oregon, falling 4-0 on Saturday and 9-3 on Sunday. Entering last weekend's action, outfielder Kellie Labor led the team in hitting with a .381 average. First baseman Erryn Gutjahr had a .314 batting average, three home runs and 10 RBI. Sandra Durazo led the pitching staff with a 2-4 record and a 1.40 ERA. Head coach Kathy Van Wyk has a 58-76 record in her third season at San Diego State.
UTES TIE FOR THIRD AT TROY COX CLASSIC: Utah went 3-3 at New Mexico State's Troy Cox Softball Classic last weekend, finishing in a tie for third place. Sophomore catcher/third baseman Stacey Farnworth was named to the all-tournament team.
The Utes opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Wichita State. Sarah Farnworth struck out six Shockers and surrendered only six hits while helping her own cause at the plate. Farnworth hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning. Wichita State threatened in the fourth, but outfielder Molly McLean threw out the potential tying run at the plate.
Utah dropped its second game on Friday to No. 22 Minnesota, 8-5. A Sunny Smith home run and a 2-for-3 performance at the plate by Jenny Monson, who was just coming back from a hamstring injury, was not enough for the Utes, who committed three errors and gave up six unearned runs. Kristin Arbogast struck out six in six innings of work, but took the loss.
The Utes opened play on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Arkansas. Stacey Farnworth helped her cousin Sara Farnworth get the win on the mound by going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI at the plate. Lyndsey Trevis and Michele Larsen also drove in runs for the Utes. Utah fell to New Mexico State, 9-1, in its middle game on Saturday. The Aggies pounded out nine hits against Ute pitching. Arbogast pitched 4-1/3 innings in the losing effort.
After the tough loss, Utah rebounded to defeat Penn State in a 1-0 pitcher's dual in its first game of the tournament in championship bracket play. Sarah Farnworth got the win for the Utes in a complete-game effort. She struck out eight and surrendered just four hits to improve to 4-2. Stacey Farnworth once again delivered the game-winning home run for the Utes with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth.
In the semifinal round on Sunday, Utah lost to Oregon State, 3-2. The Beavers posted a three-run third inning to stake an early lead they never relinquished. The Utes scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and stranded the potential game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh.
Hashimoto went 2-for-3 on the day, also driving in a run. Michele Larsen went 1-for-3 with a run scored and another driven in. Stacey Farnworth went 2-for-3 with a double. Arbogast gave up seven hits in seven innings to take the loss, falling to 1-4. The Utes also committed three errors in the game.
HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS... is in her third season as Utah's head coach. Stevens owns an 85-45 overall record and a 41-23 mark against Western Athletic Conference teams. In her first season, Stevens led Utah to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the WAC. Last year, Stevens guided a Utah team that started seven freshmen to a 36-21 overall record and a third-place finish in the WAC at 19-13. Stevens hasn't slowed down during the off-season. Last fall, she was named head coach of the USA Softball Junior National Team that will compete in the 1999 World Games in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-27.
The former Ute player and assistant coach came home in September of 1996 following a two-year stint at the University of Massachusetts. Stevens was the associate head coach for the Minutewomen during the 1995 and 96 seasons, and was named UMass' head coach in June of 96, three months prior to being hired by her alma mater. In each of her two seasons at UMass, Stevens helped the Minutewomen reach the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
Stevens began her coaching career as an assistant at Utah from 1981-84. In addition to her collegiate coaching portfolio, Stevens has been a nationally recognized pitching instructor over the past 14 years. She has also worked internationally, and was the owner of Mona Stevens Enterprises from 1989-99.
QUOTING STEVENS: On last weekend - "The bright spots were that we started to hit the ball better, and we were doing better at that consistently throughout the line-up. We wanted to win the tournament, and I really think that had things gone our way we could have won all six games. It was a combination of things: We had six kids that were sick and Jenny Monson is still not all the way back from her hamstring injury. But we are also still a young team, and because of that we are playing to the level of our competition right now. I was happy that we showed some character by coming back to beat a good Penn State team after a bad loss to New Mexico State on Saturday. We had a tough call in the game against Oregon State at first base when we were rallying in the bottom of the seventh. I thought that they were the team to beat in the tournament, and we were that close to doing so."
On the play of her team - "Stacey Farnworth was on fire at the plate. She caught a good game for Sarah (Farnworth) against Arkansas and hit a two-run homer to win the game for us. Jenny Monson is getting back close to 100 percent. We've got some maturing to do. Our infielders and outfielders just need more time to play together. Our pitchers also need to become more consistent. Kristin Arbogast threw very well against Oregon State and Sara (Farnworth) threw a great game against Penn State."
On playing San Diego State - "They are always quick and will give you a tough game, especially early in the year. Our goal is to be healthy this weekend and to get Jenny Monson all the way back. We need to have her in the field so that we can put up our best line-up."
WAC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah was picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference softball race this season in a poll of the league's coaches. The Utes received 52 points in the voting. Hawai'i received the remaining first-place vote was placed second with 54 pointsjust two more than Utah. Colorado State was picked to finish fourth with 40 points, followed by UNLV (35), San Diego State (30), San Jose State (21), New Mexico (14) and Tulsa (14).
