QUOTING STEVENS: On the Spring Break trip - I thought that the San Jose State tournament was a very positive experience for us. We beat (sixth-ranked) Arizona State and (23rd-ranked) Iowa as well as a very good Arkansas team on Saturday. We jumped on Arkansas so fast that they didnt know what hit them. Arizona State proved how good it is by winning the Kia Klassic against a tough field last weekend. When we played Iowa, that was a very exciting game. A lot of the fans at the tournament came over from where ever they were to watch that game and a lot of people talking about how good our team looked. We showed what we are capable of in those three games.
Then we went to the Kia Klassic and lost all four games, which we had no business doing. I think that we proved two things during our trip. First, we proved that we have the talent and are capable of beating just about anyone. But, we have also proven that if we dont play with focus and determination, we can also be beaten by anyone. That was a defining 10 days for us. I think that we learned that we, as a team, are lacking leadership. Its not a matter of heart. Its just a matter of maturity and discipline. We need to learn to stay calm when we give up a few hits and not get rattled. We need some people to step up and be leaders for us.
On the San Jose State series - I see this weekend as a very important one for us as far as determining what we do the rest of our season. We have the capability to take all three games, but its going to depend on our kids relaxing, staying confident and remembering who we are as a team. We need to play to win, not to play not to lose. We are a very good team when we play aggressive, think positive and work together as one. We cant be a team of individuals. Weve only played three conference games so far. Everything else has been preseason. So, we just have to look at this as the start of our second season. Now we have to play well enough to post a reasonable record and make the conference tournament, and then take it from there.
