SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's pitching duo of Sarah Farnworth and Kristin Arbogast shut down in-state rival Southern Utah on Wednesday afternoon as the Utes opened their home schedule with a doubleheader sweep at Ute Field. The Utes won the opener over the Thunderbirds 8-0 in five innings and took game two 4-0.
Farnworth struck out 11 of the 17 batters she faced, walked none and allowed just two hits in game one. She improved to 10-8 with the win.
After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, Utah (19-17) scored five runs in the third. Jenny Monson doubled in two runs and Lyndsey Trevis hit a two-run homer, her second long ball of the season. Monson, Trevis, Michele Larsen and Amberly Johnson each got two hits in the game.
Audrey Jensen gave up two runs, one earned, off of four hits in one inning for Southern Utah (7-37) to fall to 3-11. Jennie Kerr gave up five earned runs and five hits in 1-1/3 innings in relief. Arbogast evened her record at 9-9 with a four-hit shut out for the Utes in the second game. She struck out five in seven innings.
Arbogast got all of the run support she needed in the first two innings. Lisa Hashimoto led off the bottom of the first with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stacy O'Farrell and scored on an error by third baseman Tina Clark.
Molly McLean singled to drive in Larsen for the Utes' first run in the third. Later in the inning, O'Farrell drove in Hashimoto and McLean with a single. Both Farnworth and Hashimoto went 2-for-3 in the game.
Tori Sandoval fell to 2-6 with the loss. She gave up four earned runs off of eight hits, struck out one and walked one in six innings.
Utah hosts a three-game series against Western Athletic Conference rival Hawai'i this weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field. Southern Utah hosts doubleheaders against Western Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
