SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The first day of the Montana State Invitational was completed on Jan. 13 at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. Two-time defending NCAA Champion Colorado is leading last week's Utah Invitational winning Denver team by just four points. The Utes are 14 points off the lead. It looks as if Colorado, Denver and Utah will be alone in the race for first as they are thirty points ahead of the fourth place school.
The men's 10km freestyle race was won by Utah's Rob Whitney who finished 17 seconds in front of the second place finisher, Henrik Eriksson from Colorado. This is the second event that Whitney has won in the three races he has competed in as a Ute. Last week, he won the same event at the Utah Invitational. For the Utes, Whitney was followed by Peter Svedesen who placed ninth and Zack Simons who took tenth.
Kristina Joder continued her impressive pace in the 2000 season finishing third overall in the women's 5km freestyle. On Jan. 12, Joder also finished third among collegiate skiers at the U.S. Nationals competition. Other Ute finishers were Marika Engstrom in ninth and Lene Pedersen who placed twelfth.
The Montana State University Invitational will continue tomorrow at Midway with the men's and women's classic cross country races. On Jan. 14, the competition continues as the alpine events will take place at the Big Sky Resort in Big Sky, Montana.
