This Week:
The University of Utah women's tennis team will open play in the inaugural Mountain West Conference season this weekend. The Utes play host to Colorado State Friday, Jan. 28 at 5:00 p.m., and Wyoming Sunday, Jan. 30 at 11:00 a.m.
About the Utes:
Utah is coming off a 9-0 annihilation of Utah State in the season-opener, in which the Utes won every match in straight sets. Earlier last week, Utah put in a good showing at the U of U Invitational at the Eccles Tennis Center, where a Ute player was in each of their respective finals, with Anna Stechert winning an individual championship in the Division IV tournament.
There is no question Megan Payne-Dorny will be spearheading a young and banged up Ute squad. The inexperienced Utes will look to the senior to provide leadership in her quest to cap off a phenomenal Ute career this season. Payne-Dorny posted a 20-7 overall record last season and displays national experience, in the form of NCAA appearances, a national ranking and a fall bid to the ITA All-American tournament.
Sophomores Linn Ronnberg and Irini Kotoglou showed great potential last season. Ronnberg garnered a 15-14 overall record, while Utah has yet to see all that Kotoglou brings to the table, as she played injured throughout most of her freshman year. Another sophomore, Brooke Wilkinson, who played mainly doubles last season, will be vying for a spot in the singles lineup.
Freshmen Cassie Kasteler and Frida Kareld, although recently joining the Utes in January, have left good first impressions on their teammates in early practice sessions. The two have brought a lot of junior tennis playing experience, and success, with them.
Walk-ons Anna Stechert and Jane McBroom bring well needed depth to Utah. They will be essential to team depth with the injuries of junior Heidi Thomas and sophomore Hillaree Hawkins. Thomas has been a consistent performer for the Utes in her first two seasons, while Hawkins played sparingly in her inaugural season due to femur stress fractures.
Hopefully, Payne-Dorny will find help in easing the inexperienced Utes into competition through the confines of the Eccles Tennis Center. Utah has produced the most favorable home schedule in the school's history with 12 of 17 matches in Salt Lake City on the season.
About the Rams:
Colorado State, like the Utes, is a young, inexperienced and untested team. The Rams did, however, have a good showing in Salt Lake City at the ITA Central Region Tournament. CSU hasn't played since the fall, where junior Allison Lisle posted an 8-6 record, and should lead the squad.
About the Cowboys:
Like the rams, Wyoming will be revving up its spring season at Utah. Seniors, Sarah Kay, Shirley Mendoza, and Melanie Roberts are the big three for the Cowboys. Kay won the Division
II tournament at the BYU Invitational in the fall, and lost a three-set match to Kansas State's Eva Novotna, who is a ranked opponent. Colorado State's Allison Lisle defeated both Roberts and Mendoza at the ITA tournament in straight sets.
Looking Ahead:
After three consecutive home matches, Utah will head to Washington State February 4 for a noon match against the Cougars. The match against WSU will be the lone on the road in Utah's first nine duals.
