SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Ski Team dropped to finish the RMISA Regional Championships in fifth place. Colorado won its fourth straight invitational of the season, edging Denver by 21 and New Mexico by 65. Colorado has won all but one of the year's competitions, in which it fell to Denver by just 1.5 points.
The Utah men struggled in the alpine disciplines on Saturday as only one men's skier was able to finish the slalom. Four Utah skiers were either disqualified or did not finish one of their two runs. The women's team faired much better with two top-ten finishers as sophomore Liz Sherry placed third and Sabrina Lawrence took seventh in the slalom.
The Utes were somewhat disadvantaged in the nordic races this weekend by the absence of two of their top cross country performers. "One thing that will hurt our team score," says head coach Kevin Sweeney, "is that Rob Whitney and Kristina Joder will be competing in Lake Placid." In light of Whitney's absence, Utah's Torin Koos stepped up with one of his best results of the season, finishing ninth in the men's 20km classic cross country race. Pat Casey and Ryan Quinn also finished in the top-20. Marika Engstrom led the Utah women, finishing ninth in the 15km classic cross country. Lene Pedersen also placed well, taking 13th.
The Utes will spend the next two weeks preparing for the NCAA Championships that will be held at Park City and Midway, on Mar. 8-11.
