SALT LAKE CITY - Two-time defending national champion University of Colorado ski team is in first place after one day of competition at the CU ski invitational. The Buffaloes have won the last two invitationals and are trying to make it three straight. Denver trails the defending champions by 38 points and the Utes are in third, 67 points behind the leader.
In the cross country portion of the competition, Pietro Broggini from Denver, finished first in the Men's 10K freestyle. Rob Whitney was the top Utah skier taking sixth place. He was followed by Zack Simon in tenth and Petter Svendsen who took twelfth. In the Women's 5K race, Katka Hanusova of Colorado, placed first followed by Britta Wienand from Denver. Kristina Joder and Mirika Engstrom were Utah's top finishers placing eighth.
Denver's two-time defending NCAA giant slalom champion, David Viele continued his dominance in this discipline finishing two seconds in front of Andy LeRoy. Viele was the only skier to finish under two minutes. Sophomore Scott Woodland was the top Ute finisher, taking fifth. 1999 NCAA Women's giant slalom champion, Aimee-Noel Hartley also repeated her performance winning by .50 seconds. Freshman Annik Boulva was a team high seventh for Utah.
