Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's softball team defeated the New Mexico Lobos, 7-2, and 4-0, at home in a MWC match-up on Fri., Apr. 28. Utah moves to 33-20 overall, 12-4 in the MWC. New Mexico is now 32-15 overall, 10-4 in MWC play.
In game one, senior Sunny Smith led Utah at the plate, batting a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Sophomore Michele Larsen added three hits in three at bats, with a double and two runs. Senior Nicole Wilkinson hit a solo home run for the Utes, adding one run and one RBI. Utah totaled 11 hits in 25 at bats, seven runs and seven RBI. Kristin Arbogast tallied the win for the Utes, pitching seven innings, giving up five hits, two runs, three walks and struck out five.
The Lobos were led by sophomore Sarah Maulorico. Maulorico was 1-for-3 at the plate with one run and two RBI. Kathy Moore recorded the loss for the Lobos, she is now 14-8 overall. New Mexico had five hits in 24 at bats with two runs and two RBI.
Arbogast broke Utah's single season record for innings pitched in game one vs. New Mexico, and the record in now 294 innings pitched.
In game two, Utah's Kristin Arbogast and New Mexico's Danielle Cassara went to work in a battle of the pitchers. But it was Utah who shut down the Lobos, 4-0, with six hits in 24 at bats. Senior Lisa Hashimoto-Hall was 1-for-3 with a triple, one run and an RBI. Teammate Lyndsey Trevis was 1-for-3 with a double and one run. Arbogast records her fifth shutout of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up only five hits in 31 batters faced, zero runs, four walks and struck out one. Arbogast improves her overall record to 32-16.
New Mexico's Kelly Glass was 2-for-4 in the contest. Danielle Cassara took the loss for the Lobos. She is now 18-5 overall.
Coming Up: Utah hosts Colorado State on Sat., Apr. 29 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) (MST). The Utes finish their regular season at home vs. Brigham Young in a doubleheader match-up at 12:00 p.m. Utah is the host of the 2000 Inaugural McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Championships which will be held May 11-13 at Ute Field. Game times are all day.
